SWEET GTO. Know why you have kept it!

This is going to be a veryyyy interesting thread if it keeps going. Great idea.

My mom told me along time ago that compliations were things that usually came and went. That collections are the things you will take pride in for possibly your lifetime.

That said, I have 3 collections
1. silver baby cups, maybe 12 - 15
2. silver bowls, again maybe 12 - 15
3. white glass called milk glass collection. cake stands, vases, covered boxes, the list goes on. I have no idea how many. 5 or 6 big book boxes packed like sardine cans. probably the most expensive thing (collectively Smile ) that I own. except maybe my daughter's college education.

Can't wait to go home on the vacation. I plan to go to the storage and open 1 box just to enjoy a few pieces of it while I'm there.

Sea of Japan/East Sea or Dokdo/Takeshima?

As it so happens, yes.

You don't collect anything? Did you ever collect things when you were small?
Oh yeah, one more thing, Schwa...

I don't collect, but I still have my old comic book collection (worth thousands of dollars, now). I've got some very valuable baseball cards, too.

Not wanting to put down any who have posted thus far, but i always thought people that collect things were a bit odd. Especially when its just basically junk without any value, monetary or otherwise.

My brother collected carrier bags from stores around the world. WHY?????? It wasnt for the memories of a particularly great clothing store he'd visited, it was simply the need/urge to collect/hoarde.

Is this why you guys do it? Do you have sentimental reasons? Can you pinpoint the time you decided to start collecting things or a particular thing?

Do you mean that you don't know what it is like to find a quiet, secluded place somewhere and fondle your special things for a compulsive half-hour or so?

I collect knives (for some bizarre reason), and am looking forward to buying a sword at the Insadong knife shop before I go home. All the knives I have collected so far (and there are not many of them, but very good quality) are utilitarian, and, as I was raised on and around farms, knives are always handy. Even now, I almost always carry even a small pocket knife on me. It's surprising how often a knife comes in handy. They are not so good for fondling though...

I'll take a stab at some of your questions.

Are collectors odd? Yes, they (we) certainly are. There is something inherently odd about devoting a large portion of one's free time, disposable income and shelf/wall/closet space to an activity that typically has no meaningful financial or health benefits.

Yes, some people do sell their collections for a handsome profit, but if that was their motivating factor all along, then they're really investors, not collectors in the purest sense. Generally, a collector always buys and never sells, except piecemeal. When a collector sells off his entire collection, there's much more to consider and weigh than just the money he's offered. It can create a huge gap in one's life that the money by itself doesn't fill. It's like telling the inveterate golfer he suddenly can't play anymore. No gradual tapering off -- just stop. Or the hobbiest artist he can't paint anymore, the amateur bodybuilder he can't lift weights anymore, or the trainspotter he can't be a spindly-legged geek with ill-fitting spectacles anymore.

In addition to being odd, collectors are also usually proud. There's a definite "trophy element" to collecting and then displaying, showing off and boring people with one's curios.

Why do we collect things and when did we start? Everyone's different. Children will often be introduced to collecting as a hobby by an older relative who'll show off their own collections and help the neophyte get started and educated. That's how I got into coin collecting. Some collections get handed down from generation to generation, or often from grandparents to grandchildren. I also remember being encouraged in school, show-and-tell, and I think we were given assignments to start our own little collections of this or that and build them over the school year.

I collect lint in my navel.

I still have my collections from the following years: 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005. What happened to the others? E-bay, of course...

Collecting isn't one of my compulsions. In fact, I hardly ever was a collector. I have a comic book collection because I liked reading comic books when I was a kid. I would read them once and save them. The collection is worth thousands of dollars because I was lucky enough to have had good taste, I guess.

I got baseball cards because my brother liked baseball. I went along with him to the store (being a good big brother) when he wanted to buy cards. I sometimes bought some for myself.

Irrelevant Tangent: I once heard Jay Leno, or maybe it was Johnny Carson, ask this exact question in his monologue. The audience reaction surprised me. People burst out hooting and hollering, laughing, screaming, cheering and stomping. "Woo-hooo!! WOOOOO-HOOOOO!! Hell yeah!! Collect things! Woof! Woof! Woof!!" It went on for quite some time as the camera panned across the studio audience to show the utter pandemonium this question had triggered. I think it was at that moment I gave up trying to understand American humour.

The hosts of these talk shows usually go out and do a 5~10 minute "warm up" with the audience before the taping of the show. The viewing public doesn't see this part of the show. My guess would be the host and an audience member had a funny conversation about collecting.

Letterman makes jokes which only the audience gets like every show. I love Dave, but always found that annnoying.
