Hey.
So I'm a Canadian high school student in korea. I actually finished half of my gr12 year and had to drop out due to health reasons. But now I'm healthy so I thought I'd do something useful while I'm here. I've been reading a lot about the possiblity to teach english in Korea but it seams bleak for me to get a paying job. Since I don't have a bachelors degree or even a high school diploma yet. But I am a good student... top 20 of our grade out of 240. I've read about private tutoring as well but I've read that it is illegal =(.
So my only option is to volunteer my services... Would say a korean elementary school accept my offer? Maybe as like an "assistant teacher" that just goes around for 1on1 help or helping out with classes and such.
Anyways here is more about me... I'm actually Korean... lived about 15 years in North America... I speak Korean fluently as well as English...
Any advice would be appreciated about what I could do with my time here. |

IF you are a HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT who would like to volunteer, then MOST elementary schools have programs for their kids that occur during the lunch time.
The parents come in and help the kids. Talk to the English department head at the school nearest to you. I am sure they would love to have you come in as a volunteer with the parents and kids at lunch time. |

You might be clear to tutor with the visa that you have (F-1? F-4?), but probably not with the board of education. Where you born in Korea? You might have dual citizenship without even knowing it. I don't know if this is only true for adults, but I'm pretty sure you need at least a high school diploma to get a license.
How about going to a high school and offering to tutor a couple of students for free during lunchtime? Good way to meet people your age. Just make sure Immigration knows about it. |

| Have you thought of volunterring at an orphanage or community center? They usually want teachers/tutors. |

Why is it that so many of you have reading comprehension levels so low?
he/she is a Canadian high school student in Korea. Probablly with family...and was probably attending an international high school. Said student left halfway though due to health reasons and has some free time before completing her/his diploma. No where did he/she say anything about being korean.
Advice: If you want to do something really worthwhile then I would suggest volunteering at some orphanages. They would really really appreciate it. Worknplay is involved in orphanage visits so they could probably help set it up for you. |

What about reading comprehension?? Not meant to be offensive so please don't take it as an attack... just a point of reference.

Sheesh I guess I need to work on my writing. =P
I AM Korean by blood. I moved to the states when I was 1. Went back to Korea when I was in gr.3. Then went back to Canada when I finished gr.6 in Korea. I know, lots of moving =P.
Anyways thanks for your advice. I actually don't have a dual citizenship. Koreans who apply for another citizenship may keep both citizenships until the age of 18. At the age of 18 the person must pick one country to belong too. In this case I picked Canada because my parents don't want to send me off to military in Korea. Although I wouldn't mind...
Anyways I am here on "vacation" and have received permission to stay for 6months. I'll be leaving in 2 months but that doesn't matter, I don't think I ever passed by a document that said F1 or F2 when I came here.
I just thought since I'm bilingual (Korean and English) I might actually do something useful while I'm here instead of the usual drinking with friends and stuff...
I appreciate all of your advice, I'll look into some volunteering at elementary schools, maybe middle schools, orphanages, etc...

If you're a third grade Korean high school student in an academic programme how the hell would you have time to do anything but study?
Finish your high school and then you should be able to get a job in a hogwan or doing private tutoring very easily. Do the TOIC and TOEFL tests so you can show off your test scores. That should be all you will need.
I still find your story a bit incredible. |

but you have to admit, most of the posts are so off that's it's obvious the posters didn't grasp what the op said.
Yo bum suk---the op is not in high school right now. the op is a Canadian who is of Korean ancestry and currently living in Korea. the op had some health problems and didn't finish grade 12. The op has some spare time before he/she will finish grade 12. |
