get yourself a really good case - like a hiscox - and take it with yu. it won't weigh much - yu can check it in. excess baggage is worth it.

i brought a guitar, a mandolin, a geomungo and a kayageum back from korea recently - all in very good cases and all as excess baggage. all are in perfect condition. my guitar has travelled by air in its hiscox over a doxen times now.

if yu really want to ship it, go to nagwon shijang and talk to some of the guitar people there. maybe they can give yu a crate for it...

Hi Hojucandy, and thanks so much for your reply..

I dont think I can take both guitars as excess baggage as Im doing abit of travelling on the way and it would be mega hassle... although your idea sounds good so I wont rule it out

Tell me, for the excess baggage did you have to tell the airline in advance or did you have to pay, how much?

Maybe its worth pointing out taht one of the guitars Im bringing is a pretty crappy acoustic guitar of little value that I would just give away/leave if it wasnt covered with over 100 signatures and doodles from people Ive met all over the world in the past year

The other one is a very good 5string bass- I have a hard case 4that

i paid a lot - about 20,000won per kilo excess. pretty excessive but worth it to me as they were precious instruments. i didn;t give any notice to the airline.

i though pretty hard about posting my guitar as the case is very good. unfortunately it was 5cm too long. the maximum dimension for postal articles is 0.9m (from memory).

i had two more guitars too. i sold one to a member of this board - hope he is enjoying it, and i left the other, a rather heavy dobro with no case, with a korean friend in ansan. i'll pick it up next time i visit - probably in a year.
