This is all and good, but you can ask yourself the same question as to why women will buy a $1,000 designer handbag, when they could get a cheap one somewhere else, that looks just as nice.
Some people go to department stores to get suits because they are designer or they are at least a brand name that people like. |

| How much is a boss suit in Japan compared to Korea? I have trouble believing that there would be a big difference in the price. |

when I was in tokyo I thought japan was only a little more expensive!
a beer would be like 1 dollar more., or a plate of spaghetti would be 2 dollars more than in korea etc.. either way it was only like a couple dollars more.. which is nothing really, becuase when you compare the restaurants or bars in japan to the crap here Its worth it..
realestate! well yes japan is expensive! but korea is not cheap either!
end of the day. some things are more cheaper here .. but only by a few dollars.. I think we will start to see less than less japanese coming here for bargain shopping! because they will realise china is the place to go now! better quality and cheaper prices..
see you all in SHAG HAI |

| After paying 4000 won for a bowl of instant ramen noodles in a convenience store in Japan, where the portions are even smaller than here, I have trouble seeing how anything could be cheaper there. Except possibly real estate. |

No sure about that. Once you pay the 보증금 (you get it back) property here is reasonably priced. Slap down 30 million won in Gangnam and you can rent a decent sized officetel apartment for 500,000 won a month. That's very reasonable compared to the more salubrious areas in London, Tokyo, and New York. |

I think all this thread shows is that RR was so desperate to find something, anything negative about Korea AGAIN, that he stooped to posting that a cup of Starbucks coffee is fifty cents more expensive in Korea than it is in Japan! |

Are you guys talking about buying real estate? If so, good for you. ... From what I've heard, the cost of setting up an apartment here is prohibitive for most people -- you might have to pay four or five months' rent that you'll never see again, and you often need a Japanese "guarantor." Right now my rent is reasonable and I have a decent place (arranged through the company I work for), but it's way out in the country and not nearly as nice or spacious as my old place in Bundang, where I could go to Seoul just about anytime I felt like it. I'm trying to eat more fruit and vegetables now and find the cost of many items really unreasonable -- living on ramen or rice is just not an option as far as I'm concerned. Then again, I'm less stressed out at my current job and more motivated to prepare decent meals for myself, so maybe it's worth it.

I'm sure that's wrong, anyway ... I'm weaning myself off Starbucks, but the last time I was there I paid a fortune for a cup of tea. At least 300 or 400 yen, I think.

Artificial inflation of prices is to blame for the escalating prices. It has nothing to do with the "real world" market situation. Unecessary tariffs drive up the price of imports so Koreans will choose local goods.
As for property values, blame that on speculation by a handful of very rich asswipes and the fact that more than 25% of Koreans live in Seoul (and the other 75% want to). Property values are much more reasonable outside of Seoul (well outside of Seoul, that is). In Osaka or Tokyo, a dippy little one bedroom would run you double what it's listed for in Seoul. |
