Well, pipe up... what are your opinions of the parties and their politics? I fully admit to having almost none, but then, I haven't checked if I have my voting package yet, so my (lack of an) opinion doesn't matter much. |

Im pretty vocal about the fact that i support hannara. I am extremely fed up with where the URi party is taking this country, and although Uri does have some good ideas on the domestic front, their foreign policy vis a vis DPRK and the failing allience with the US makes me a true blue hannara supporter. Therefore I will support Hannara and vote for them in this election. I also quite liked the current mayor, who is a hannara member so I hope that the new hannara mayor, who is certain of getting elected, will continue the policies up to now. Anyway, this election will send a clear signal to the rulling party, and Im happy to be able to contribute. |

(Speaking about the parties generally because I really don't have much of an opinion on local issues...)
I agree that Uri has screwed up royally on the "Sunshine" front. However, I think the GNP will be a general disater in the "social reform" department. So I'm a bit torn.
Overall, though, I think North Korea will kill the Sunshine Policy on its own, by continuously testing the patience of South Koreans. (Anyone follow the train fiasco last week? Sheesh, talk about overplaying your hand.) And let's face it: for all their tough talk, the GNP brainiacs don't have any magical fix for improving human rights in North Korea. What's Park Guen Hye gonna do? Call up KJI and threaten to start blowtorching South Korean leftists' *beep* if NK doesn't empty its gulags? That didn't work in the 70s, it ain't gonna work now.
All things considered, I have to say I'd still prefer Uri in power. |

No one is really hoping that thr GNP solves the problems in the DPRK. Short of a massive bombing campaign and invasion, it will not be solved quickly. But as I said before, its all relative. Right now you have a government that imposes no conditions on any aid. Infact, the worse the DPRK gets, the more support it gets from these clowns. Now we hear talk of "unconditional support" which is basically giving the North carte blanche to be as bad as they want. What I hope the GNP does is actually make it clear to them that aid from Seoul will have conditions on it. Rice should be monitored as to who gets how much and it should be delivered to the PEOPLE not the elite and the army. Thats why the North kicked out the WFP - Seoul just gives them the rice without asking any questions. Rice is just one example. Hold them accountable, demand things in return for rice. Demand that they stick to agreements if they ever want fertilizer from Seoul. Aid cannot be uncoditional, support cannot be unconditional. There SHOULD be fallout from the train fiasco. NK broke a deal they signed. But with Roh and Uri, there wont be any fallout. This is why Im votong GNP. With uri we know what we get, and its bad. With the GNP I hope that Seoul assumes the position of the more powerful broker. For chrissakes, ROK has 20 times the GDP, a much stronger, better equipped army and the only hyperpower in the world as backup. This is like the 6'2 250lbs kid with Mike Tyson as backup cowering before the 130lbs weakling on the playground. |
