10 Month Public School Contract

I'm thinking about a public school position but they want me to sign a 10 month contract.

Is this normal?

I think not. The only reason I can think of that they ask this of me is they are trying to avoid severance and pension. Of course they say the severance is included in the salary.

The present offer is 2.6- 2.7 from approx. 8:40-9:00 until 4:30. I think 22 hours per week.

The school is in Seoul and they have never had a Foreign Teacher. The recruiter doesn't know how much an Asst. Korean Teacher would be there to assist teaching the 30 students per class.

I smell a fiiiiiiiiiiiiiish basket!

You can only legally claim severance if you work 12 months.

If you work less, its entirely up to them if they want to pay it or not.

It looks like a good job. very nice salary, not too many working hours. Basically you know from the start that you wont be getting your bonus. Better that they are upfront about it.

A 10 month contract doesn't make sense, if you're expected to be available
for both complete semesters. The salary is great, way above average; but the difference
just compensates you for the loss of your severance pay. You might be entitled
to it if you substitute the term 'severance' for 'bonus' in writing. Cool

I would like to have a public school position but I don't think I could get the time off during the day to attend a 1-2 hour court hearing once every 1 or 2 months if/whenever the court decides the WAYGUKIN deserves justice.

I was told that the school would provide the material/book. How in the hel do ya teach 30 kids without an Assistant using the Korean English school book?

2.6/2.7 for 22 classes per week?? Full benefits except severance. Governement makes sure you get paid on time, every time.

I think you should find a typical hakwon that pays 2 mil for 30 classes per week, cheats on medical, has no pension and will try to screw you out of your severance....

I have several friends who would like the gig that you have been offered... no worry...

The daily working time is normal, 10 months is not that bad... sounds like they want you from now till next school year starts (or the next contract cycle) ... then if you renew you get everything else... (severance is ONLY payable if you work MORE than 1 calendar year).

If you don't renew you get a good salary, benefits and flight home. Walla problema dude... No surprises there...

Just curious would a 10 month contract affect pension that much? Other than the two months that it doesn't get added to? You would still get 10 months worth of it no?

Pension and severance are separate issues.

Pension is 9% of your total salary. It is made up of a 4.5% contribution from each of the employee and matching contribution from the employer.

Severance is the 13th month salary after working 12 months for an employer. It is typically paid out by the employer on termination of employment.

His indicated salary is more than 200k per month above normal for a level 1 (highest level for a 1st year teacher) public school teacher. It appears like they have included that in lieu of severance because at 10 months he will not be eligible for the 13 month pay.

Right, so the time frame of his contract shouldn't affect his pension. Whether he works 8, 10, or 12 months he should still get 9% of his total salary as pension right? I'm asking b/c he mentioned the school trying to get out of pension.

Another question...What are the PROS and CONS of having an ASSISTANT Korean Teacher?

What are there job responsibilities or what should I expect if I have one versus if I don't?

It varies widely. Legally, I believe, you are supposed to always have a Korean teacher in class. A good co-teacher can make a big difference, a disinterested one can be sending her kids the message -- whether intentionally or not -- that your class is not to be taken seriously. I would say make building good relationships with them a priority.

Good point about the unknown/disinterest message.

One thing I may not have made clear in my original post is that the 2.6 - 2.7 million salary includes my housing allowance/rent which I already pay. So that's only 2.2 - 2.3 million Won(net) teaching 4-5 classes of 30 students each, spread out through 8 hours.

Does the Asst. make lesson plans? Without an Asst. I would be so alone, with the exception of all the swell people on this board. Very Happy
