If you don't care about the biggest sporting event in the world then, okay, don't care.

But, I seem to remember North Americans in Korea going a little lampshade, i.e. mental, during the 2002 World Cup.

Fair enough. Oppps, forgot this was a soccer fan type of question. It's not a bad game and certainly beats golf or race car driving.

(Thinks: Hmmm, that probably didn't curry any favor with the soccer fans either. Confused )

Maybe a few did but I think in general it was missed. I didn't know many people there who watched it.

Actually, what I meant to say was Americans in Korea! Not stateside. I know a few Americans in Korea who got World Cup Fever in 2002.

Not a big soccer fan...never will be...maybe since I'm Canadian and we suck at it and never make the world cup........but how can you not catch the fever when everybody here is caught up in it!! I hope Korea does really well so I can see as many people as possible act even crazier than normal.

Yeah...I don't really care about it and I'm married to a Korean. They take soccer a little bit too seriously.

NFL football....nice and bloody. Now that's a sport!

I'm a complete soccer idiot. Know the basics, but mostly because it's pretty simple. But, during the 2002 WC it was easy to get excited because 1. I returned to Korea in the middle of it and 2. the sheer human emotion that was everywhere. (Yes, we DO feel others' emotions/energy...)

However, between the games themselves, I couldn't have cared less. Still don't. As a matter of fact, all the flopping I saw once I actually started watching games just disgusted me. Soccer players are sissies. Period. Even worse than the NBA.

Besides, being here for the '02 WC makes this far distant WC seem pretty durned boring. And the games will be on during sleep hours, so.... just not going to be the same.

I'll probably end up watching a game or two live, but... yawn....

Football (aka Soccer) is pretty good to watch. I'm looking forward to the greatest sporting competition in the world, bar none.

It should be great!

I agree. If it means nothing to you, why post about it? Why start a whole new thread? There are tons of things I dont care about, like hockey, the NFL, etc and I dont start threads to tell the world how much I dont care about them.

See, there's a whole group of us who aren't at all interested in soccer (or any other of the spectator sports) but who do find the herd/sports fan phenomenon to be a fascinating topic of discussion. We don't get a chance to talk about it very often, because there are lots and lots more of you than there are of us, so when we do stumble upon each other, it's true, we tend to talk in dazedly confused terms about the glassy eyes, the elevated heart rates, people screaming at TV sets. We get it, we get it, there's something missing in us that is not missing in you people, we get it, but that doesn't mean we're not allowed to talk about it among ourselves without you lot coming unglued every time we bring the subject up.

We're not trying to take soccer away from you. Really. If the fact that we like to watch you people watching sports means we're shallow meanies, then fine. We're shallow meanies.

What's currently most interesting to me about soccer-mania is people tearing themselves away from complete soccer focus when they suspect someone, somewhere is talking about soccer in any terms less than devotional, so that they can be sure to tell us to get a life. I mean, what is this, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all?

Whatever. Save your energy for the game. The rest of us want to talk about it now.

[sound of door quietly closing]

Okay, are they gone now? Good.

So, W/T/F is it about any team of anybody playing games that inspires such fervid devotion, devotion that can lead to fist fights and rioting and people dying over it in the streets after a disappointing game, match, pitch, ad nausueam-finitum? Some of the people I love most are like this -- live and let live, I always say -- but I still find it to be one of the most puzzling things I know about humankind.

Not to make the point my grammar schlong is bigger than the OP's, but did anyone notice the title is (possibly) wrong?

"Who could care less about the World Cup?"

Let's put this as a statement:

"I could care less about the World Cup."

"I could not care less about the World Cup."

In the first sentence, you're stating you're still capable of a lesser degree of caring.

Let's use another verb. I could eat less. I'm capable of eating less food.

You're getting fat. What are you going to do?
I could eat less.

That woman is such a drama queen and sucks you in every time. What are you going to do?
I could care less.

See?

Now charity would dictate we could assume the OP meant "I don't care about the world cup but I'm curious if there is anyone out there who actually cares somewhat about the world cup and has care that could be reduced by vigorous debate on the issue. Bring it on! Mission accomplished! Fuddle duddle!"

Of course my initial impression was the OP was asking for those in agreement with the statement that you're 100% out of caring for the World Cup.

I think Canadians don't like soccer because it's not as fast and bloody as ice hockey.

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not but I agree with you. As a Canadian, I grew up with hockey, football, baseball and basketball. Soccer was never very popular and few guys played it during phys ed in high school. My son played it through elementary and middle school but once he reached high school where he could play football and basketball, he was finished with soccer.
The reverse is true in Europe although many Europeans like hockey. I like the nationalism World Cup brings out -few other sports do that, but I find it boring to watch. I don't knock the athletes who play it because they are obviously in superb shape and can do incredible things with the ball. But I just find a game that doesn't allow you to use your arms and hands unless you are a goalie doesn't make a lot of sense. What other sport has those restrictions? Shouldn't any sport require strength and dexterity from all parts of the body? And I really find it hilarious the way the defenders protect their crotches on penalty shots. Don't they wear cups? It would look damm funny to watch a hockey player blocking a shot like that.

Anyway, I'll watch the WC after the hockey and basketball playoffs end. After all, even soccer is better than not watching any sports. And of course there will be a lot of hooligans making the news as well and that is always good viewing. Maybe they should make a rule for them as well barring the use of their arms and hands. There'd be a lot fewer injuries.
