Last winter I was looking for a copy of one of my favorite novels, East of Eden, but the only one available at the time bore Oprah's self-righteous seal of approval. I loathe Oprah for reasons manifold, and couldn't bring myself to purchase what I considered a tainted edition of Steinbeck's classic.

Was I being nitpicky? Possibly. But I knew there was no way I'd be able to, every time I picked up the book, look at that cover and be able to live with myself.

And you?

Rather than elaborate on my thoughts, I will simply say: second!

I just do not trust that woman. She is up to something, nefarious.

And you have no idea how hard it was not to vote huffs gas.

I wonder if the day will come that Upton Sinclair's The Jungle is vouchsafed with McDonald's('s) Happy Meal Book of the Month logo.

Not at full price from a real bookstore, and probably not reduced at a secondhand bookstore that I respected (I'd be embarassed in front of owners I know), but maybe at a garage sale - "paperbacks 50 cents each". Maybe then I'd grab it.

How much does the Oprah's seal lower the value of the book for you is the question?

What about children's books (DK, classics, and others) from Chik-Fil-A? Even if it's a great book, and almost nothing at the used book store, it still feels like promoting the Mormon church.

Yeah, I totallyl despise her for encouraging people to read. Now everyone is out buying and reading books when they should be watching television instead. Rolling Eyes

If the general American populace needs Oprah to tell them to what read, then surely there is no hope.

haha Wink ... or else we think so differently!

I thought it was obvious: gouge out that sticker!, cut off the corner if it's unremoveable. Books should be used not preserved anyways, the words revered not the pages.

And by the same reckoning, all hope is lost because all those danged public school teachers over there tell kids what books to read and goodness knows the kids are our FUTURE for crying out loud!

That Oprah recommends books is not a bad thing. She is encouraging reading. That's good. Not bad. She is not TELLING people to read ONLY certain books and no others.

I'm sure Oprah has good intentions, but she's certainly wielding a lot more power than anyone deserves over everyone's reading habits. People should read things that aren't recommended to them. They should be reading things they're forbidden from reading. If Oprah ever starts a shiatlist I'll read every book on it.

I have no problem with Oprah recommending certain books; but putting her logo on the cover is another matter.
