Absolutely classic. So you have a company bragging about its dominance of the ESL education industry that, at the same time, stays staffed exclusively, or at least predominantly, with underqualified and inexperienced teachers! Sad when the 'biggest' of the companies has to leverage job security over pay in order to attract warm boddies.

Koreans are the best people in the world...until you work for one!

There comes a point at which a brand simply should not be trusted, and YBM-ECC reached that point a long time ago.

Which of course explains why every time a thread like this comes up some posters come on and say how much they enjoyed their time at their ECC as a first year gig.... Laughing Wink

And then go on to say that they have moved on to something better and they wouldn't work there again.

It is true, YBM will not pay you what your worth. I didn't work for ECC, but e2u which is being phased out.

As I've said in other threads, YBM does troll Dave's ESL for comments about their company (as does Pagoda).

There has been so much unfair bad press about YBM, ECC and Wonderland.
So what if they are famous for 11 month sackings?
So what if they have a habit of falling months behind on payments to teachers?
So what if they could not manage a choco vine over a Sh*thouse?
So what if ESL teaching has not been existent for 40 years in Korea?...they are just being creative!
So what if they are offering 2 or 3 hundred less than most other schools a month?
For mine, I think you cannot truly experience Korea unless you have experienced the thrills and delights of working for such an adventurous organisation.
Getting paid on time and being allowed to finish contracts in a professional environment can be so damn monotonous.
KUDOS TO YOU YBM!
KUDOS TO YOU ECC!
KUDOS TO YOU WONDERLAND!
for making the whole Korea experience that little bit more special for all of us!

I would imagine that if it wasn't for these three chains, Dave's forum wouldn't be as popular. There would be far less to complain about.

Any directors or supervisors from one of these schools would like to respond...here's the ball...run at me!

Actually, ESL was formally introduced in Korea in 1883 with the opening of a school to train interpreters. American and British run missionary schools soon opened thereafter. These schools were very successful at producing speakers of English by following the Direct Method up until the Japanese began taking control of the schools in the 1930s.

I am standing strong on this. ESL has not been existent in Korea for 40 years!
It has been around 123 years.

I worked at two different ECC schools way back in the day.

The first one was pretty good, I stayed there for two years. I know people who are still at that same school for 7yrs+ now. Pretty insane huh? The school was great, just the location was crap. I couldn't handle being in a polluted part of Seoul and never seeing a mountain.

I came back to another ECC school. This one was decent too. It wasn't a franchise school so it had the bucks to pay for experience I guess.

Back in the day, starting salaries were 1.1mil...so people complaining about 1.9 or 2mil just make me smile. People who stuck out the 1997 crash helped get those salaries increased, as we demanded it when taking on new jobs or re-signing with current jobs.

People shouldn't be so eager to lump all ECCs in the same mold. There are actually very decent schools. I have found the management is what makes or breaks one of those schools in regards to teacher-employer relations.

Read my last post again mate and see if you can find the admission of defeat and the small amount of humour.

With all due respect, why would anyone care if they troll the pages? I've seen this mentioned before in many threads about YBM ,as well as other schools.

Other than fire you (which would be difficult for them for many reasons) what do you have to worry about? I know many people tht have slagged on these pages about many schools, and a lot of them have worked in Korea for many years. The problems they've had didn't come from posting bad comments about co-workers / schools / etc.

Even if they did can someone, remember you can get a job very quickly at another school in Korea, Japan, or Taiwan.

Another perspective. Did you know the owner of YBM is a billionaire? Made all his money from English.
Things have gotta change. English should be nothing more than a school subject.

YBM is charging up to 23 million won per student (per year) to attend "Korea International School" (which is owned and run by YBM in Bundang).

That is almost 2 million won per month, per kid, in tuition fees.

http://www.kis.or.kr/admission/adm04.asp

At the same time, they are running advertisements on daves to recruit teachers for YBM on as low as 1.8 per month.

No YBM sympathizer could defend that.

Soviet man....when has a company transfered its profits onto the salaries of its employees???

Except in the case of bonuses for employees of course.

So by what rationale should a teacher expect more because he or she worls for a big profitable company??

Just curious here...

Also, ECC is a decent first job for new and relatively inexperienced teachers. Evaluationg an ECC job when you have experience is ridiculous as it no longer really applies to experienced teachers...consider it an entry-level position for new teachers.

gotta change that to 'was' Homer! While they may have been(past tense) a decent place for a newbie to wet their feet...their stagnated payscale has rendered them lowballing cheapskates!

Why would anyone throw away 4-6 grand a year just to work for one of these companies? 1.8 x 12 = 21.6 mil won+1.8 sev= 2.24

compared to any other place

2.0x12+sev= 26 mil add in pension and we are talking alot of money

current pay

2.3x12+sev= 27.6 mil

why on earth would anyone want to work for these companies when you can make alot more even as a newb?

Stay away from the cheap hogwans and chains and eventually they will either be unable to find teachers or have to raise their wages to get teachers!
