Are there any sort of noticable hiring preferences in S. Korea? As in male, female, age or nationality?

Kindergarten - female teachers
Elementary-High school - best candidate goes
University - dare I say males tend to be prefered (what do others think?). I think recruiters for unis are won over by an authoritive Westerner in a good suit
Business classes - students will definitely have a preference for a male as the 'teacher' but a female for eye-candy - females are absolutely not treated seriously by male students in a business English class
A hagwon out in the sticks - anybody goes

For as long as there is a teacher shortage here, in fact, you'd have to be extremely aesthetically challenged not to get taken on somewhere...

Spot on, though I am not sure if unis use recruiters...wish they did!

An education degree, much less real teaching experience, might intimidate some hogwans, actually. Best get a sociology or geography major they can more easily manipulate, who won't be so appalled by what they have the nerve to call a 'school'.

I teach business English full-time for a company, and I've had nothing but respect from my students (so far). I've had 4 women students out of around 100 total students in 6 months. It may be because I work for a company that actually has female employees, managers, etc. , or because I'm more educated than my students, or just because they don't want to get in trouble for being jerks.
And, I'm a not-particularly-attractive female.

Well, I am female, NA, blue eyes, thin and pretty. But I don't have an education degree and I am not VERY young(early 20s). It's not so easy to get a job here. Maybe 4 years experience and not being in Korea at the moment is making getting a new job tougher. I'm a good teacher, too. I stayed 2 years at my last school and they wanted me to stay a third year. Some schools just don't want to pay airfare. That's why I think they'd rather hire someone already in Korea, regardles of looks or whether you are male or female.

I simply just cannot believe this.
If your description is true, you are golden..something is amiss.

What I meant by "not VERY young(early 20s) is that I am not in my early 20s.

But even still, given what you've said, jobs should be easy to come by. They're generally easy to come by. Just some are better than others.

I am neither blonde or female. As a matter of fact, I have a shaved head and tattoos and am in my 30's. I had absolutely no problem securing multiple contract offers (at both hagwons and public school). I was even approached to teach SAT prep. Maybe I am an exception to the norm, but I personally had no problems securing a good position. I do have prior teaching experience, however. Maybe that is the key. As far as the Geography comment, that is what my MA is for.
