2:30 a.m. and the couple next door is having a huge brawl again

buncha huge crashes, and she keeps yelling "kill me! kill me!" in korean

i don't want to interfere in other people's business, but things sounded so crazy that i just went over there a couple minutes ago and rang the bell to ask if everything was ok. the guy had blood smeared all over his face and waved me away.

our officetel security wouldn't come up, and someone else out in the hall said it's different in korea and there's no point to calling the cops because the woman would just be mad at us later.

i dunno, should i just sleep?

ROBT.

tell them that if they keep making noise, you're gonna call the police or something. only someone as arrogant as an american thinks he can save the world, but everybody understands whatever the word is i'm trying to think of.

Are you an idiot or just trolling?

The Brits, French, and the Canadian military had quite a bunkload of "saving the world" in their international programs: What do you have to say about this fact?

You're a Canucklehead - are you not?

Cheers.

I had a similar situation in another country which continued for 1 WHOLE YEAR!!!!

I also wouldn't get involved directly - my neighbors and security guard certainly didn't - because you never know if these people are connected with gangsters, and crazy people can do things that crazy people are wont to do...

Certainly, if it happens again, the best bet is to contact the police, or get a Korean-speaking friend to contact the police on your behalf. If you can, get sound recordings of the fights/screaming as it will support your claim.

You should absolutely call the cops! Just dial 112
That's wrong thinking that they won't do anything. Yes, if a Korean calls the cops, they won't do anything. But if a foreigner calls the cops, believe me, they will. Korean national pride is on the line. The cops will go the extra mile for you because you're a foreigner. I had a noise problem with my neighbor once, called the cops and they fixed it fast.

Maybe the fight is over, but you should absolutely report this incident to your school and try to have a Korean that you trust call the building manager and the police. If I were you, I'd even go to the nearest police station in person and try to report what you saw. If your Korean isn't good, take your cell phone and have a Korean friend translate for you over the cell phone. I would guess even a mixture of Korean, basic English and body language would get the job done. You should do it because, well, imagine you were in that woman's shoes and some guy was kicking your ass. You'd appreciate the intervention.

If you care about violence against women in Korea, I'd even write up what you saw and try to get it published in at least the letters section of a newspaper like The Korea Herald.

That guy's lucky I don't live next to him, 'cause I'd kick his stupid ass.

Good point! You need evidence. maybe it is better to wait for another fight and then call the cops. Right now it would be your word against his. What do you other people on Dave's think? Should he report now or wait for the next fight?

I'm just worried that if he reports now, the guy next door might tell her to shut-up while he's beating her.

Next time, call 112 and have your address ready for the police. You could even have a Korean write down some phrases which describe what's going on for you.

1.) You've got a snowball's chance in hell getting a letter about that published in a Korean newspaper.

2.) Not all domestic violence is the guy's fault. Don't automatically assume he's the one getting violent. Chances are it's him, but don't jump to conclusions. I've been assaulted by a psycho ex before.

Well, there are cultural issues and there are cultural issues.

A guy I worked with for several years had a long deep scar on his arm from when he tried to stop a Korean from beating his girlfriend. His arm was badly mangled. Everyone - of course - including the woman - sided with the Korean guy.

Call the cops, it's what they get paid for.

I have a really sick sense of humour and I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but it seems like you had no business interrupting what was clearly an act of consent.
