well... i've been working split shifts, and i hate it. i can't even sleep well on the weekends. anyway, the alarm didn't wake me up today. cheap piece of plastic. so, i've been late twice before, and i was told that if i was late again, i'd be fired. yeah, i know. couldn't happen to a nicer guy, right? or maybe you were going with "they're a bunch of anal retentive asshats".
anyway, here i sit, not having bothered going to work late today just to get fired, looking at all this stuff i'm going to have to pack up, and looking for a new job. luckily, i have people i can stay with, but i don't know who to stay with or near. the way i see it, i can move in or near my lady friend. we've only been seeing each other for a month, but we seem to connect well. or i can move in with or near my bro in busan. he's a cool guy and a good person to hang around. he's much more stable than me, too, but he's probably going to give me a bunch of shit for losing my job. or, i can try to get a job on jeju island or someplace scenic like that. sex, nature, or family. tough decision.
going back home isn't an option, as i can't afford a plane ticket anywhere and i don't actually have any kind of home to speak of. |

Don't count on you getting fired for sure. If you do, the one thing you'll absolutely need to get is a letter of release from your current employer. |

sure the labor law states that the employer has to give you a "Letter of Release" - even if the contract you signed says that they don't have to..
then you need some cash during the next 4 weeks whilst you are getting a new job - ??
the labor law also states that to fire a full-time employee an employer must give one (1) months written notice...
tell your employer they cannot fire you for one months until after they give you the one months written notice -
then if they are no cooperative - tell them you will take them to the labor office and report them (just threaten them with government officials coming to their school and giving them large fines)... things such as
broken contract (if they ever even paid your salary just 1 day late)
not giving you medical insurance
not giving you pension
not paying the tax they took from you to the tax office
charging you too much tax
not having registered you with the Education office
etc etc
unless you can get a job immediately - your biggest problem is cash for the next 4~6 weeks and "letter of release" - though you can get around that by just taking a one-day trip to Japan - of course if you have the cash..
by the way - I seem to have lost my link to the labor office site from my computer - does anyone seem to have it? thanks... |

I'd go with the brother option. Jeju is beautiful, but there isn't much going on there and you'd be cut off from a lot of culture. Moving in with your lady-friend is a bad idea after only a month... it might not do much for your sex life either. After all, you know what they say about absence making the heart grow fonder...
For now, just do your best, get a few more alarm clocks and if they turf you, your brother is your best choice. So sayeth the frog. |

I hate to sound unsympathetic, but why can't you get to work on time and/or find a decent alarm clock? As someone said, they probably can't fire you without a months warning. Have you ever thought about the poor bugger that has to cover your classes when you're late? |

Youve done more damage by not bothering to go into work late.
Chances are you wont get fired. Its one of those empty threats in a lot of cases, but if it ever came down to it, regardless of your work situation, the law and labor board will look more favorably upon an employee who shows the intention to work, rather than just gives up at the first hint of adversity. I dont really see how being late 3 times could constitute a dismissal though, given that gross misconduct is generally required. You could group it with misconduct but you need written warnings and such first. 3 instances of misconduct and failure to improve performance can be categorized as gross misconduct but most people find themselves late occasionally, 3 lates in my book would amount to a verbal warning, 3 more to a written warning, and 3 more to the final warning. Ultimately you need to look at your contract and the section regarding termination.
As for those people who said they cant fire you immediately, well, they can. What they would have to do however is reimburse you the notice period theyve decided they dont want you to work. So youd be fully salaried. If you want to leave for another institute then youll need to make sure you get your letter of release, and youll have to fly out to Japan with the new school to get a new E2 Visa. Japan now requires that you stay over for one night too; you cant simply enter the country, get your Visa and then leave.
And really, the alarm clock excuse is a lame one. Stern words would be had if you were repeatedly late for your job back home, simply because were out in Korea doing something that many dont consider a career doesnt entitle you to a free ride with regards to these matters. Simply put, you should have replaced or bought a second alarm clock when you first realized your current one wasnt up to the job, and if you needed any more indication then the second instance should have been ample. Piece of advice, visit www.wakeupnews.com and download their PC alarm clock software because Im assuming youre typing everything from a home computer. Select one of the default rings or chose an mp3 you want to wake up to, and only allow yourself to turn the alarm off if you solve one of three levels of math problem. |

i'm getting an f4 visa, and i already got 3 responses from jobs i applied to this morning, so i don't think i'm gonna have too many problems with the whole job search thing.
as for the alarm clock, this is the first time that this alarm clock pooped out on me. i had another one, but that one stopped working, but this one seemed to be doing ok, but it was just a plastic piece of sh!t. the other lates were due to other circumstances.
anyway, i went in to see my manager, and she told me to go ahead and come in tonight and tomorrow, and then we'll speak tomorrow night, probably with the big boss man.
anyway, because of all this crap, i'm gonna miss my afternoon nap. god i hate my schedule. |

When you go into the office, make sure that your bases are covered.
E-2s need a letter of release and are required by immigration law to give a 30-day notice of termination.
In your case I would wait until your F-4 comes, if it already hasn't, because under an E-2, you could definitely screw yourself of getting jobs in the future, possible blacklisting. Can F visaholders get blacklisted by immigration? |

Don't you have a cell phone....that's what I use for an alarm when I need to, which, thankfully, is next to never. |
