Just a warning: I'm not particularly tech-inclined; I need the idiot's version.

I'm moving to another country in a matter of weeks. I don't have a laptop but intend to buy one this summer. I bought an external hard drive in order to save all of the files that are presently on my desktop PC at home. I thought I could simply plug it into the USB port then click and drag files into the drive. When I open up "My Computer" however, there is no icon for the new drive.

I tried running the disk that came with the drive. There is a 'setup' file which I tried to run. It prompts me to enter the drive serial number however. I've tried the serial number from the enclosure, and from the HDD itself but it keeps saying that it is not a valid Serial number so i can't continue the installation process.

Does this drive need to be formatted? What should I do? SHould I take it back to the place I bought it?

The Case is a "Sarotech Hardbox portable Hard Disk Drive" Model Number FHD-353. It is a 3.5 inch Samsung 250gig HDD [SP2514N/DOM (250GB/7200rpm/8M/PATA)]

Any ideas/Advice?

Thanks,
22

Yes, it needs to be formated.

-Start
-Control panel
-Administrative tools
-Computer management
-Storage
-Disk Management
-Find your installed drive (you should see it here), right click it and select format.

Hope that helps.

If it's not recognising the serial number then you're entering the wrong serial number. Look elsewhere on the packaging and the HD enclosure for other possibilities.

I don't know specifics about the Samsung drive but I came here with a 500GB External LaCiE HD and it was simply a case of plugging it in the USB and running a quick format on it.

Other than that the first poster was on point in his instruction.
