Hi All,
I am leaving 7 months into my 1 year contract and have a question about the way that paid leave days are handled in Korea.
The way that it works at home is that I earn the right to take a paid day off every 365/x days where x is the number of paid days off I get a year. If I get 10 days off a year then I can take a day off after 36 days, two days off after 72 days and so on.
Since I am leaving 7 months in and I get 10 paid days off a year, I think I should get paid for 6 or 7 days off that I have not taken.
Does is work like this in Korea? Is it unrealistic to even ask?
It is not explicitly covered in the contract but I wondering what the Korean law is or what the *usual* way that it is handled is. |

The usual way it's handled? You are made to feel guilty for any of your vacation time that you are actually allowed to take. You're lucky if you get to take all of it. Getting paid extra for vacation you don't use? Lotsa luck! |

In my experience, hagwon owners don't want their teachers to take any vacation days because they try to squeeze them all in at Chusok and Solnal because the student's mothers often demand that the hagwon be closed for a couple of extra days during that time. |

In the US you usually can't take ANY vacation until after the first year. You earn it, it might accrue according to your employment contract, but you can't actually take your vacation. Some employers will pay you for accrued vacation days that you have not used when you terminate your employment. This too depends on your contract.
In Korea, you could get paid for these accrued vacation days, if it is in your contract. Most employers here schedule your vacation for you. You go on vacation when the school or institute is closed. So, unless you have some provision in your contract to get paid for unused vacation days, you probably won't get paid for them.
Actually, in the west, many businesses schedule your vacation for you as well. A business might shut down and have everyone on vacation time. They might have a system of rotating vacations based on seniority or some other system. |
