To horrify Billybrobby even further, I need to rent a treadmill for two months in order to get my slightly chubby dog to be actually a bit underweight in order for him to fit within the airline's weight requirement for pets in the cabin. Right now, he's getting lots of exercise, but considering that he'll be nine years old this year, I am not going to be dragging him out for three walks a day once the heat and humidity hit. I don't want to be out in that either.

If I have to, I'll buy one because money is no object when it comes to my dogs, but I'd prefer to rent.

And yes, if you are reading this, billybrobby, I DO intend to go around telling everyone I meet, "Hi, my younger dog has a metal pin in her leg and my older one is a little chubby so I got him a treadmill," because that is EXACTLY the kind of person I am.

Do you live in an airconditioned building? Trips up and down the stairs indoors may be a decent alternative.

No, no a/c in this building and it's only three floors. Also, my dog has knee problems.....got to stick to flat surfaces for him. And no, he doesn't chase his tail. I HAVE thought that that would help some, if he was into that kind of thing.

I'm sorry to say this but I think you'd be wasting your money.............

Best to feed the dog less........and I mean a lot less......unless you can't stand the notion of not "killing with kindness".

the truth is, human or beast, the more exercise one gets, the more one eats. But the problem isn't here . The problem is that the more one exercises, the fitter one gets. So with the same amount of food, you go further.......so as you get fitter and your diet remains the same, you will get fatter.

Believe me, this is a big misconception, that aerobic exercise leads to weight loss. At best it is helpful at maintaining weight and suppressing appetite somewhat.

I've never seen a dog on a treamill.. and the dog is actually going to find this amusing??.. i think not.. good luck tho

why not just put your dog on a crash diet.. feed it less would be a start!

He is on a diet. But, I'm not taking chances....I want him exercising as well. He eats a vegetarian kibble, raw fruits, veggies (raw and cooked), and uncooked oatmeal (yeah, dry, he's weird, he loves it). I've cut tofu out of his diet because it's processed, but he used to eat that, too. He does not eat any of those dog "snacks" that you can buy just about anywhere and I don't feed him junk food. Ever. But, he is nearly nine years old, he's been neutered (a lot of dogs gain weight after being neutered) and we live in a very small place. There is no room for him to run and play inside.

I highly DOUBT that he's going to find the treadmill "amusing". I just hope it isn't too hard to get him to walk on it. He loved the conveyor belt at the airport, so I think I've got a chance.

I don't think he's really getting an aerobic workout...I just want a way for him to exercise that doesn't involve going out in the heat and humidity. I actually considered getting a treadmill for this purpose last summer and we didn't have a flight looming over our heads at that time. All three of us love walking. But, we also all hate walking in heat and humidity.

On the bright side, I found a wonderful website that has the best carriers I've ever seen and they are VERY lightweight. I've already ordered one for him. If anyone ever needs a lightweight bag for their dog, recommend checking out this site: http://www.sturdiproducts.com/ .

And yeah, I might be on it more than him, but if I can get him on it at least once a day, it'll help.
