| There's some fan deathy reason why many Koreans you know are suddenly dashing madly off to the altar. I just can't remember what it was exactly. Something about the moon? |

| Nothing to do with the world ending in 4 more days. Something about two moons happening or two of something happening this year... There's a rash of Korean marrying. My GF had 5 coworker weddings last month. 5x30,000 won. That's not chump change to your average Korean salary worker. |

| Hmmm. maybe that's why my friend and her ex(both Korean) just got back together after being broken up since October. She broke up with him and said it was "for good" and now, they are together again. hehehe Last year, she had talked of marrying him in 2006. hmmm |

Having worked for a few big employers, I just had to accept wedding "white envelopes" as an annoying though inevitable cost of doing business in Korea. The amounts doled out over an entire year were considerable. Even after leaving the salaryman world, it took years & years before all the people I'd once worked with got married and stopped sending me invitations. What a relief it was to finally be unknown to the younger employees there.
Nowadays it's the little brothers & sisters of my friends who are getting married, or the daughters & sons of my older friends, and the staff working for our clients. Got two invites to weddings from the latter just this week -- both for Saturday afternoon -- and it's caused no small disruption in our work with them.
I pine for the days when I could get off with just 30,000 won. Seems that although I don't get as many invitations as I used to, the ones I do get are all pretty much of the "have to go" type. And because of (a) the familiarity/closeness of the inviter and (b) my high & mighty status as business tycoon (harr harr) the smallest sum I can get away with anymore is 50,000 won. In fact, 100,000 won has become my new standard. Basically, if it's less than that, then the relationship probably isn't close enough to warrant inviting me. |

I just came from the Immigration office and it seemed like everyone there was in couples.
A friend of mine working in Japan told me that last year 10% of all marriages there were interracial. |

I heard indeed that it had something to do with the moon stand .
It is a lucky year to get married and Koreans mentioned to me
that Cily Hall all over the country are fully booked !
Usually the wedding halls are for about an hour .This year you
can stay for 20minutes  for the same price of course !
A Korean coworker told me that it might be just a ''roomer'' from
these wedding halls to earn fast money .
It is the same ''believe'' like eating cats and dogs are healthy .
They don't know if it is true - they just follow the ''roomer'' |

Right. The increments are 30, 50, or 100 thousand. Anything less then 30 is just cheap, as it hardly pays for your beef soup meal. 40 is unlucky cause the 사 of four sounds like the 사 of death in Chinese. Anything between 50 and 100 leaves the happy couple wondering, "Why didn't he just sport up a 100?" |

The reason is the 2006 lunar year began January 29 and ends Feb. 17, 2007. During this time, people have two Ipchun,'' one of the 24 seasonal divisions, which falls on Feb. 4 in the solar calendar. Ipchun is said to be the onset of spring.
So this year is called ssangchunnyon,'' meaning double Ipchun year.''
Many fortunetellers say the double Ipchun is a rare event, occurring once in about 200 years.

Well my Korean girlfriend and I are arranging our marriage at the moment... but it's set for late 2007... in London... and she's not actually Korean, just a girl I met in Korea... Well Japan really - Visa runs can be so dull without accidentally meeting your future wife... I was born on 7/7/77 does that count?

| We got married in January, but it had nothing to do with what year it is. Our wedding ceremony is in two weeks and we visited the wedding hall yesterday. To say it was busy was an understatement. |

I was trying to get an explanation from my friend and she couldn't find the English to explain it. However, she claimed any older Korean she's talked to didn't think the event was steeped in any traditional luck. Her pet theory is the Korean government is just pushing the idea to get Koreans to make more pure blooded Korean babies... |
