I wen to the online concordancer page at Tom Cobb's really valuable website, The Compleat Lexical Tutor (http://www.lextutor.ca/concordancers/), and ran concordances for the two words through a bunch of different corpora totalling 4 millions words. I'm copying the results below.
Some things jump out. First, 'triple' is about 3 times more frequent in the corpora than treble (23 occurrences to  . Second, occurences as a verb were rare for both words ( 1 each; 2 for 'triple' if you count 'triple-checked'). Finally, all the examples of 'treble' appear to be British (one might be Australian). This last point appears to the important difference in regard to your question.
