I think I'd rather eat my own shit than go there. I've always thought that, though. |

Tiger, what are you complaining about exactly? The masses?
When did you last visit Samui and was it high or low season?
Just curious. I have returned to Phuket after a few years away and I must admit to having the same feelings at times. Sure Patong is still the same with the Euro trash, but, my little village in the north of the island is slowly being surrounded by multi million dollar investment properties. I'm sad about that. There are still however some lovely " off the beaten path" secluded areas that the masses still know nothing about. Shhh !

I went there one time in 1996.
Mostly its seeing a sea of all caucasian people absolutley everywhere. i don't see one single Thai person.. and I wonder if a Thai person would even feel comfortable being there?
I wonder if I'd even feel comfortable there? Looking at that picture.. I can't really say I would and I love beaches.
That picture looks like a bunch of people who were told to go there.. they went there.. but they don't really know why they are there or what to do there.
They look like they should be sitting in the hostel lobby.. but someone told them that its even better to sit out by the water.. so they did that instead. |

Haven't seen you in ages.I agree about Samui, but you are talking about Chaweng mostly. I always preferred Lamai. There are many other spots that would probably be more of what you remember. I went to Chaweng for the first time in 2003 and have been back twice since and yes it is more touristy, lots of families and very commercial.
I am going back to LOS tomorrow . |

Tourists are tourists everywhere. Tourist spots are tourist spots everywhere. Thailand is no exception. Permanent and long-time foreign residents know where to hang and where not to hang.
Having done the tourist thing to Thailand in the past, there is a world of difference between that and residing there on a permanent basis and living among Thais and becoming part of the community.
I'll take the latter any day of the week. |

what part of Samui was that taken on? Doesn't look like Chaweng (which I've been to many times) or Lamai which are the two biggest beaches. To me it looks like the morning after a full moon on Pha Ngan particlualry Haad Rin.
even by my standards that looks too crowded |

Haad Rin, Ko Pha Ngan. The Full Moon Party.
No, Ko Tao is just too small and run down. I've been there 3 times and finally gave up on it. It's pretty boring I find.
I like Ko Pha Ngan, though.
You need to head up north to Ton Nai Pan or Mae Haad.
There are some nice areas on Ko Pha Ngan, Haad Rin, though, isn't one of them. What a freak show Haad Rin is.
I prefer Phuket over Samui because it's bigger and there seems to be more places to go and explore and a lot of nice beaches. I also find the water too shallow at most of the beaches on Pha Ngan and Samui. |

The only island in Thailand I ever went to was Ko Samet. It wasn't anything special, but I liked the boat ride and the green water. Actually there weren't many people there, tourists or Thais. It was OK and I'll always remember it, mainly because a nice Thai girl was with me then. |

Some of the Ko Samui spas made it into Vanity Fair mag recently as a "hot spot." That made me laugh.
Hopefully it'll keep some of it's older charm.
Harbour Island in the Bahamas used to be a sleepy little place, fabulous for a week or two of quiet and easy to get to...then it got "discovered" by the rich and famous--now you can't get anything there under $400 US a night. |

Chaweng looked like that when I was there in 2003. However, Choeng Mon and Bophut were both lovely places, hope they haven't gone the same way.
On Ko-pha-ngan I liked Thong Nai Pan very much, plenty of aids for a nice relaxing time to be found there... |
