Hi. What is the difference between the Letter of Release and having your employer accompany you to immigration to cancel your visa??

Does one have any advantages over the other?

They are pretty much both the same.

It's probably a bit safer to get your boss to go with you to cacel your visa as immigration has been known, on rare occassions, to not accept a letter of release as it was missing some information.

Whether they accompany you or not, for you to work for someone else during your initial visa stint you need the permission of your initial employer who sponsored your visa. This is usaully done with a letter of release "e jok dong re sa/이 촉 동 리 사."

If you wait until after the visa stint(usually 1 year) you do not need anything from your employer.

Unfortunately, as much as I would have said this exact same thing, a strange thing happened to me with my visa cancellation -- Director went in person to cancel it, he said it was much easier than doing it as an LOR, he wanted to go in person to make sure that it was done. No problem for me as it meant I didn't have to submit an LOR to a new employer.

New employer applied for visa. They were told that they needed an LOR. They asked if the old director had not cancelled the visa, and immgration told them that YES, he had been in, it was on file that the visa was cancelled. However, they still refused to process my new visa without the school submitting an LOR.

Took extra time to track down the old boss, and made three of us (me, old director and new director) who were extremely peeved off by the unknowingness and continual lack or either logic or consistency that occcurs in Mokdong.

Nothing is ever consistent here! I have heard of other teachers with an E-2 who have simply just quit without getting a LOR or having their visa cancelled and they just left the country- applied for a new job and simply came back with no problems at all!!
