So I want to get myself a laptop. I might be leaving korea soon enough and it'd be easier to get one now while I'm still here.

I really don't want to spend anymore on it than I have to, since I'll probably be doing a bit of travel with it - and these things have a way of getting lost/stolen/damaged etc...

I'm not in any way a gamer, so I don't want to spend any extra cash on things that I'm not going to use ... graphics cards etc ... although, I guess it'd be nice if it could play dvds

I'm going to be running it on linux with a windows OS in a virtual machine, so I'll need a healthy bit of RAM and > 100GB harddrive just in case

So I this would be my description ...

* Needs to be light and sturdy (carry in a backpack)...
* Needs 1GB RAM if possible ...
* > 100GB harddrive
* builtin wi-fi
* dvd r/w

... can't really think of anything else. I guess that should do it ...

Also, where should I buy it do you think ?
Maybe get it shipped over ?

Thanks

Aren't laptops generally cheaper back in North America?

For that and so many other reasons it's simply not a very bright idea.

Doesn't matter, still not a bright idea. Nothing tricky here, just common sense. For starters, the warranty...

warranties on electronic goods are usually provided by the manufacturer and are valid regardless of which country you happen to be in at the time ...

extended warranties are generally considered to be not worth the extra cost... except when it comes to... laptops.
Are you going to be able to buy an extended warranty in Korea that will be covered in your home country, or will you have to ship it back to Korea?

And of course this is only one issue of many that I forsee you having if you want to buy in Korea and ship to your home country.

Anyway- you asked for advice and it's your money so feel free to ignore mine.

i'm also in the market for a high end laptop, but if you're looking for one with a 100+gb hard drive, dvd burner, and 1gb ram, it'll most likely also have a high-end video card anyway, since that's going to be a high-end laptop.

i'm trying to look towards korean laptops, since i'm here anyway and i also want hangeul on my letters!

i don't understand why people are so bent on buying high end laptops? They're overpriced, overheat and unreliable! Get a good desktop machine and a cheaper, lighter, cooler laptop for about the same price as one over-priced one and you're way better off. Gaming on a laptop is completely pointless, unless you plan on not having kids.

anyway, sorry to stray off topic... what i would do if i were you is buy a relatively light and cheap machine, then buy an external hard drive to bring with me... or an ipod or something like that for external storage. Hard drives for laptops aren't cheap, and I'm not sure if >100 gb drives even exist on the consumer market. In any case, you'd be paying a premium price.

I'm not a big gamer. I have no problem, however, with a high end, high power laptop. Suppose you like to do high end multi media editing in Starbucks or during your breaks at work?

wait till you get home... the thousands you'd save in not getting ripped off by getting a laptop that can't be upgraded/expanded (mainly the vid card/cpu) is more than worth waiting till you get home. And honestly, how many people work during their break or at Starbucks?
... at least work that requires the use of a high power machine

yeah well that goes for every laptop. hard/difficult to upgrade. that just comes with the territory of getting a laptop.

There's not a laptop in existence that'll do the high-end multimedia editing without having a breathing problems. Hell, I'd like my power on my desktop (actually, it's a server board in a server case but I don't use it that way) to be more when I'm doing video rendering and laptops don't come close to my baby.

I'll stand by my mantra. A laptop is really just an oversized mp3 player with a few extra features. The only benefit of a laptop is that it is portable and everybody I know (everybody) who has tried to reach a compromise by buying a larger laptop so that with the big screeen it can kind of sort of double as desktop generally leaves it at home because it's too much trouble to carry.

I'm probably going to buy a laptop this weekend because, alas, I need portability and have to sacrifice power to get it. I'm either buying a 7.2" Libretto or a Lifebook with a 8.9" screen. It'll be no problem carrying either around and I'll still have my home machine to do the real work.

Anyway, it's like Antrugha said. For the price of the laptop I'm going to buy I could get 3 desktops with more power and expandability (or maybe the equivalent of the desktop I'm using now with 2 gigs ram, two monitors, and pushing a terrabyte of hdd space).

Some points to consider:

1. Multimedia editing encompasses many different applications and processes. System power requirements differ depending on the process. I probably wouldn't choose to render 3d animation on my laptop but straight forward image editing under photoshop is no problem.

2. Different users have different system requirements. While hardware knowledge is essential so is an understanding of how that hardware translates into the user experience. Therefore, before eliminating options we should get the facts on what the system will be used for.

3. For a forum that is comprised primarily of expats it's amazing that mobility isn't valued to some degree. Ok, I might not have the best video card on the market but try moving to Southeast Asia with a desktop and a 30 kg baggage limitation.

4. For people that use their computer in a production environment it is incredibly frustrating and time consuming to use separate computers while at work, at home and while travelling. Having access to the documents that you are working on can be accomplished with an external harddrive but syncing all of the workspace settings and preferences for each individual application you use is a pain in the **s.

Cheers
