Excellent list. Thanks for posting it.
But he missed some obvious ones:
1. "I Can See Clearly Now" by Johnny Nash
the rain is gone/it's gonne be a bright, bright sunshiny day
A statement ahead of its time about accepting climate change.
2. "Rainy Day Women" by Bob Dylan
Hippies think this is about marijuana, but it's clearly a metaphor for taxation.
3. "Fight the Power" by Public Enemy
(Get it) lets get this party started right
Party... Right...
Get it?
4. "I'm-a-fixin'-to-die Rag" by Country Joe and the Fish
This may seem pessimistic, but the people in this song aren't burning their draft cards.
5. "Guns of Brixton" by The Clash
A clear statement about the right to bear arms in the P-whipped UK.
6. "YMCA" by the Village People
You can go there "if you're short on dough". No welfare necessary.
7. "Uncle John's Band" by the Grateful Dead
Come on along or go alone/he's come to take his children home
You know what that means:
No child left behind
8. "Know Your Enemy" by Rage Against the Machine
Yes I know my enemies/ They're the teachers
Stop right there. 'Nuff said.
9. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana
A Mosquito=drinks blood (Red) An Albino=White
Did you notice the album cover is blue?
Red, White, and Blue!
Not communist red.
10. "Sail Away" by Enya
The most requested song on naval ships headed for the Gulf. |

13. My City Was Gone, by The Pretenders. ; buy CD on Amazon.com
Virtually every conservative knows the bass line, which supplies the theme music for Limbaughs radio show. But the lyrics also display a Jane Jacobs sensibility against central planning and a conservatives dissatisfaction with rapid change: I went back to Ohio / But my pretty countryside / Had been paved down the middle / By a government that had no pride.
16. Get Over It, by The Eagles. ; buy CD on Amazon.com
Against the culture of grievance: The big, bad world doesnt owe you a thing. Theres also this nice line: Id like to find your inner child and kick its little ass. |
Waitaminute... Jane Jacobs isn't a conservative. In her books she argues against uncontrolled privatization of city infrastructure as well. And don't the Eagles sing: "Why don't you get yourself a job and kick its little a*s.."? Must be more than one version...
I'm surprised not to see Huey Lewis' "Hip to be square"!
