We have a new teacher at the school. Shehas been here for almost one month. Anyway, I was eavesdropping and heard her repeat the same phrase monotonously(sp?) over and over again. Like 5 times or more. This was ET 6 and from the Reading Time portion.
Anyway, is this a new, effective way to teach? It's kind of like those language tapes you listen to in your sleep if you're going to another country.
Should she stop? I think said party is trying different things, but this one, at least to me, seems rather weird.
I'm sure she's quite capable, but I don't hear anything out of the students. Just her. If I ever have hear anything, it's rote. The workbooks have too short of answers where they need to be writing (and saying) whole sentences. Especially when the answers are supposed to evoke(?) the past tense instead of "No, I don't" or "Because I'm a jerk". You know? Like question such as "How long have you been playing the guitar?" and she gets them to write "Five years" That just doesn't cut it. "When did he go to Japan?" "He went to Japan in April" not "April". Something like that.
I think she's got a case of the newbie blues. She taught somewhere else before. She asked me how I got my kids to listen. I don't know. It's just something you learn. Or they get used to you. I guess I'm going to have to intervene. |

jacl,
Be careful. I've been reading your posts for a long time. Usually you seem to be motivated by money first. You have always recognized the advantages that students have in learning English in a good private hogwan as opposed to the useless public school system. That seemed to be enough - to do your best in the best possible teaching environment, with money as your primary motivating force. But now you're in danger of becoming one of those teachers who puts education first.
Helping the new teacher is a nice idea. Try to do it without stepping on her toes. |

You're quite observant. Yes, money is first. But, for that to be, well...
anyway....
No, I don't want to step on anyone's toes. She asked me for help but...
I don't really care about money. It's stange though. Someone could ask for all the help in the world but... How can you give it without detrimenting their progress? Really.
It's not like you have to be a genius to figure it out which leads me to believe that this person is better of fucking off.
Forgot to mention that she has a 3-month contract. |
