When I took the boat to China.. it was pretty cruisy.. we had a room with vcr and tv.. you can rent movies and watch them in your cabin. the cabin wasn't much though.. just bunkbeds basically.
there was also a very overpriced casino.. minimum 5,000 to make a bet.. they had a staff of about 30 people waiting for someone to enter.. no one did. the minimums were too high.
the best part was the disco/bar area.. on my trip.. we saw around 40 dancing ajummas drinking cans of budweiser in there.. and they were having FUN.. really funny.
lots of on-deck place to watch the stars at night.. great boat ride in short. |

I took the ride from Incheon >> Tsingdao via Weidon Ferry. I paid 118, I think, for a bunk bed room ticket. It was great! I met some nice people on the boat who helped me once I got to China. Food was good, deck was nice, and views scenic. Definitely a nice switch from taking a plane, and a little cheaper.
I was the only white foreigner, so when I got off people were pretty shocked to see me, and cabbies, hotel hawkers, etc. swarmed me outside the station. Literally, it was insane. I backpacked in China for two months, and it was never that bad; not even when twenty or so child beggars surrounded me on a street one night. So when you get off the ferry, at least in Tsingtao, have a plan, and get out of there quick.

Sounds like a plan. Cheap, too. I can speak some Mandarin so that kind of trip would be awesome. Tsingdao isn't good, eh? I like the beer though. |

Tsingdao isn't good?/ The beer or the city? Both are great by my count, if for nothing else than their German influence!
I took my LP China book and visited a few places in my wide-eyed "christ, I'm in China, I don't speak mandarin, and I'm alone" phase of the first few days. Tsingtao was beautiful, especially for the German architecture, and walking around town can be great. Nice bars, nice expat community (pick a copy of "redstar times" (i forget the exact name, but any expats know)), and the beaches aren't bad there too. Except, someone told me a dead fisherman washed up on shore-- and it took the authorities the better part of a day to mosey on over and pick the pickled man up.
But I digress! Tsingtao is awesome. Tour the brewery (why not), meet some people if you can chat in Mandarin-- just get away from the train station (like everywhere in china), as fast as possible to avoid the pickpockets and assholes trying to take your money by more legitimate means. When you get off the train, grab your things securely, and just get out out out. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, and do not get into a taxi without a meter. China should be super cheap for you. Anyway, I hope someone has already informed you of this and the better advice out there.
