With respect to certain proposals at the UN, Beijing has been running interference for the Sudanese rather successfully, too, I might add, all in accordance with Chinese interests in the region.

Certainly, this is a severe obstacle as well... good point....

The link to the NGO I was talking about:

Darfur Cookstoves

from its website:

Quote:
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the University of California, Berkeley, CHF International, and others are working to reduce the violence against people in these camps, and to improve their access to fuel-efficient stoves for preparing meals.

Quote:
Almost all the Darfur refugees (also called internally displaced persons or IDPs) still cook on inefficient three-stone fires [photo left]. In NovDec 2005, we visited the refugee camps in Darfur, and demonstrated that with a $10 metal stove and the training to use it, the fuelwood demand could be halved. Despite a few shortcomings (see more on those below), the stoves we tested still can save each refugee household $160 worth of fuelwood annually at local prices. This reduction in fuelwood use would also reduce the refugee womens trips to collect fuelwood by 50%, and thus halve their exposure to risk in leaving the camps. The use of fuel efficient stoves in Darfur will also significantly reduce the pressure on the local environment, allowing it time to regenerate. The 2.2 million refugees need about 300,000 stoves.
