My school has just hired a black Canadian. Before the director hired him, he asked the middle school students how they would feel about having a black teacher.

Some of the classes said that it would be o.k., but only if it was a man and not a woman. Confused Shocked

Does the kind of photo matter? The only photos I have on my computer are just me in casual clothes where I'm posing with friends.

Someone once told me that its beneficial to wear like more business attire and take a photo, but what do you guys think?

Thanks for your encouragement everybody. Its just I am a little wary of the fact that race will always be a factor in someone's mind, especially when it comes to the job. But I'm out to prove them wrong as well.

check out my resume/photo www.giraffemonkey.ca/resume.html for a sample photo. In general, try and keep a nice photograph and if you don't ahve anything, then take one with a digi cam. I mean, you ARE moving there for a minimum 1 year. It may be worth putting in some good effort.

Antrugha, really nice resume. I'll take your advice and one day get a friend of mine to take some nice shots of myself. Lately, when I send information, I did the opposite of what you guys mentioned; where I sent a picture of myself where I'm in the middle of some people and in casual clothes.

Yes, it's possible but, like others said, your chances at unis are better than hagwons. I teach at junior college outside of Seoul and we've have a Jamaican with dreads as well a black South African teach with us. We also have two Indians teaching content-based English classes at the moment. I've been working in Korea for a hen's age and have found it rare to come across somebody of color teaching at a hagwon.

Go Oilers!!

Thanks for your advice. It makes sense on what you said: that if a school does not hire you because of your color than it is best not to work there anyway, because it shows their attitude. Do you also suggest that I should mention my race as well when an employer inquires of me through an e-mail? Would that be beneficial?

So, I will continue to look for the best options available, and perhaps something will come up.

In the meanwhile, can you guys point to a school/recruiter/program that is less inclined to be biased and more based on potential skills of teaching?

Thanks.
