|
|
Is it me or did Bush re-use the words he used what seems like a few months back in his latest call for a constitutional ban on same sex marriages? Quebec is often accused of having a "neverendum", every decade having a referendum on sovereignty. Just keep having them, diluting the question, until you get the "oui" vote you desire. Tip of the hat to America which at least has a whole "super majority" concept when it comes to fundamental changes. Quebec just shoots for a 50% majority plus one guy kinda clearing his throat.
The '80s and '90s there used to be an American neverendum on flag burning. Now it's about gay marriage. Is it me or aren't the really, really successful constitutional amendments about expanding/protecting freedoms (whether they are enjoyed by a majority or minority) versus restricting the rights of people? Like, prohibition comes to mind. That one didn't last long.
And aren't some of those activist judges that Bush was bemoaning actually republican appointees? |

Well, I'm certainly glad that the measure was defeated and I suspect (and hope) that will be the end of it, we'll see. The constitution of the US is one of the great documents in history and is the basis for somthing that is great. The idea that the government was going to modify it to actually discriminate a group of Americans (10% of them in fact) is pretty disgusting. It also shows just how evil, close minded and bigoted the right in America is (and how intolerant so many of those religious nuts really are). If you don't want a gay marriage, don't have one! Good job America! |

I was agreeing with the decision to defeat it by the senate. Why the throat clearing? |

Villifying all those on the right as evil is quite sweeping. I am gay and a Unitarian, and my parents are fundamentalist Christians, but they are not evil by any stretch of the imagination. Bigoted, yes. Evil, no.

I would never say everyone Seoul Unitarian, i said that "many of those on the religious right" this includes Christians, Jews and Muslims who have been in part pushing this foolishnes (although an argument could be made that the Republicans are justing using uneducated people who have faith to make political gains).
Imagine, all this has to do with poor Bill Clinton getting a hummer in the oval office. |
