Bloody 'ell - there's an American car listed too.

Perhaps Detroit has been listening.

(To be fair, I have driven a couple of US cars over the past year, and neither was as bad as the general reputation).

Mid-term elections are coming up. Lobby your congressmen now to pass a law requiring Asian car makers to have a weekly "Bad car making Monday" like the Big Three do. It's the only way to even the field.

Detroit has been listening for a long time. That survey is just initial quality. JD also does a long-term quality test which is more telling. They test cars after 3 years of use. Here's an article on the most recent one-2005 (there should be a new one coming out later this summer).

Also, see this chart:

Notice that Lincoln, Buick, Cadilac, Mercury, Ford, Chevy, and Chrisler are all above average. Now take a look at where Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Volkswagen are. Oh, and don't forget to insert your Kia joke here: ________________________________________________________.

Indeed, Korean cars have vastly improved since their introduction into the NA market. Remember the Pony? The original disposable car; use it once and throw it away. Having now to compete with Japanese cars in the world market, build quality has been tightened up. However, with the exception of the Samsung (Renault/Nissan) cars and the newest Sonata, most Korean cars still look like washing machines.

Lots of people still have baaaaaaaaaaaad memories of those Ponys. A mechanic at a garage I worked at described them just as that "the world's first disposable car". It predated the Yugo. Hyundai really needs to move up the value chain like Honda and Nissan. They started selling on cheap/quality/fuel efficient but then moved up the value chain to high profit sports cars and luxury cars. Even today no woman is going to spread 'em for a guy driving a $50,000 Hyundai Mongoose Executive.

Hyundai should use KIA in North America to move up the value chain. Alternatively, the Pony stink could probably be wiped away if Hyundai released a value priced, sporty two seater convertible... something along the lines of the Miata.

Indeed. The Pony's legacy lives on, in that the resale value of Korean cars is in the dumper. Yes, the new Hyundai Grandeur looks a lot like a BMW; now try getting laid because you own one. -- A convertible would be a splendid idea. A ragtop Tiburon with a smokin' V6. Why has no one at Huyndai thought of this? Oh, now I remember; this is the land where imagination comes to die.
