Recruiters bring the parties together, try to find a match for both sides, help with legal paperwork, and when the deal is done they get a small fee for their trouble. Schools use recruiters because there are a lot of crap applicants out there. The recruiter weeds out some of them and provides a service to the school. The school pays for the service.
Both parties need to look out for themselves - the teacher and the school. The recruiter is like a matchmaker. It can bring the two parties together but it's up to the couple to make a good marriage.
If you make a bad deal, don't blame the recruiter. They get paid by the school and they are not your mother.
For the school, the recruiter often presents applicants that the school rejects. Frustratingly, they only give the school one applicant at a time to accept or reject. The school is under a great deal of pressure to accept subpar teachers because that's all there is available. In our last round of hiring our hogwan had to reject a parade of poor quality applicants. I would be sad, but not surprised, to find them all teaching out there somewhere.
Still it is useful to use a recruiter. They present choice after choice. Finally, when a gem appears, you can make a deal. |

Some hagwon onwers who use recruiters really shouldn't be. I think it's a face thing because some owners speak better English than the recruiters.
Plus they could be using them so that a conflict of interest exists in the owner's favor. |

a recruiter you could try is ESLKOREA2006, they are based in Toronto and recruit for most of the big chain schools. The guy who runs the company is pretty honest and won't place you in a bad situation. Their email is |

I guess - it doesn't really matter whether people think one recruiter is good or bad - its the school they give you... I think half the time the recruiters themselves don't really have a clue about the school they are offering you - and just need to fill their oldest waiting positions first..
so regardless on whether the same recruiter gave an excellent school to one particular teacher one day - the next day the same recruiter could give a terrible school to the next teacher who walks in their door... |
I think Yesterday is definitely on to something here. It makes sense if you think about it, although there are definitely bad recruiters out there as well. Ultimately, it is the school and your living conditions here in Korea that will make or break your experience. It doesn't make much sense to blame a recruiter for a school or director's shortcomings. The most important thing to understand is that many times there are miscommunications between the recruiter and the school that are not the fault of the recruiter.

I agree that a recruiter is simply a match maker and isnt responsible to hold each parties hand through out the entire process. If they were called upon to solve every single problem they would never be able to move on to the next recruit.
On a happier note for me i have spoken to a few more responsive recruiters regrading my situation. Is it common that if i have an Asian face that they would automatically assume that im a Gyopo or whatever you spell it as? I had so many question me on that.
One question regarding recruiters. I assume that the process in using a recruiter is as follows:
-make contact with recruiter
-recruiter does a mini interview of you
-if successful recruiter forwards your information to camp/school
Then at this point in time, the school is supposed to call for the final interview right? What if the school "rejects" the applicant? Would the school tell the recruiter? Or would the school simply ignore the entire application?
I was called up by ATC and did a mini interview. The guy sounded really nice and sincere, which helps a bit. Anyways, he said he forwarded my information to the school but i have yet to hear from them and was just curious what would be happening now.....i wouldnt mind at least finding out if i was rejected.
It would be really nice if someone just told me straight up we arent hiring you rather then simply ignoring me. |

I hope you are right ... I begin an ESL position for Stephen Cho and eduorange.com in one month
I have spoken to him on the phone many times and he does not have any inkling of an Australian or American accent of any type.
Thanks for showing that the previous ramblings were all a "load of crap"
<Snip. . .just more trolling crap>
I hope nobody's actually taking this seriously. Stephen Cho's a good guy. He got me a good job, always did what he said, and I'm using him again.
|

I can't comment on this Stephan Cho person or on someone with the last name of Grommesh (sp?) I can however, comment on "Sunny Jang" from ENI, and I don't think Roch is talking out of his "whatever" on the point he made on that character. He wasn't trolling, I believe, when he talked about that guy. I had some dealings with the dishonourable Mr. Jang and he came across as a total thug and someone you wouldn't want anywhere near you at any time. I'll leave it at that, only to say that I felt that he was rather a crook, out for easy money without having to work for it and best avoided in any job search you are doing. |

Recruiters are worthless unless you want a standard hogwan job in kyeonggi-do.
If you want a job to meet your specific requirements, then do your research and scour every job ad from multiple sites and call around to specific schools to negotiate what you want.
The best way to get a university job is to reply to job ads from the universities themselves, not recruiters. Recruiters will just dump your resume in a database and recruit you for their more urgent jobs. |

The best recruiter is you. In short. I had this one recruiter.. well, let's just leave it at that. He thinks I owe him 50,000 Won, but I think he owes me 1.3 million Won. Ok, that's enough |
