No wonder some people are called hyenas! |
Great vid, CC! That's what we wanna see in this thread. That male lion could fit the hyena's entire head in its mouth! Individually, no contest.
VanIslander - that's what's so cool about hyenas. They're pretty poor hunters individually, yet they've not merely survived but flourished as a race by teamwork. Even though they possess a bite that - pound for pound - is the hardest in the animal kingdom, they're pretty wussy by themselves. But put a gang of them together and they're pure malice. The great thing is they STILL don't kill something quickly even if there are 10 of them. They dish out sheer punishment. Cool also is the fact that they're not evil; they're just doing their job; since evil is a concept that does not exist in the animal kingdom (obviously). They're interesting creatures, all the more so because they're genetically more close to cats than dogs despite the dog-like appearance and they make cool noises.
Now, I realize a bull wouldn't stand a chance against a lion or many other wild animals, but....this bull is bloody tough. There are loads of bull vids around - some of which involve them viciously attacking humans. In one, a woman is nearly killed by one, but I don't wanna show that in case it glorifies human suffering. If a bullfighter gets it though, that's different, they deserve it! |

| That was a killer video, no pun intended. Hyenas are truly badass, but I think more consideration should be given to animals that go for it alone, without any backup. |

Pound for pound I would suggest as others have the wolverine, I think the fiercest creature around.
I have seen many videos of this predator and many others, but for the small stature they deserve consideration.
If your talking big and tough then I am not so certian, the toughest ones I have seen are Kodiak bears, followed by polar bears, I have yet to encounter a hippo, crock, lion or elepahant
if your talking deadly and sneaky then surely some of the snakes and/or spiders must command respect.
The bald eagle should also deserve recognition, seems to me that not much but humans and mother nature kill this creature, they seem small but are much larger than most think. |

pound for pound...i'm going with army ants....
The day i see a hyena lift a hippo off the ground, carry it away and devour it in a matter of minutes, then they'll get some respect. |

| I think the toughest animal is this pet tarrantula spider I have. I strapped its cage on the back of the motorbike and drove two hours to a friend's, who'd watch it for two months. Oh my god it looked dead. All the whoops and bumps of the road had flung it to the roof of its glass box, then down again, repeatedly. It was a crumple of its former self, a limp rag doll, and looked stone cold dead. But it was just exhausted, apparently, from the unexpected trampolining action, something it wasn't prepared for. Anyway, it totally recovered in a day. Hard to tell about psychologically. Eats live crickets with its usual zest and rests on all eights as ever. 2nd largest in the world, 20 year lifespan, in its third year. Righteous creepy crawly indeed. |

Neat video, but I'm not too surprised given that those appear to be 3'-4' dogfish being eaten and that is a pretty decently sized Pacific NW octopus... |

| My pound-for-pound vote goes for the wolverine. Ferocious little buggers. |

| hyenas are the only thing that threatens lions.. granted they are definitely #2 but male lions go out of their way to kill them.. they are just misunderstood.. they deserve a lot more credit than they get |

Has anyone ever seen the show on discovery, when animals attack other animals? animal battles? animal vs. animal? They take two wild animals and pit them against each other in a computer-generated battle and see who comes out on top.[/quote]
