This has been bothering me for months and months. My relationships and teaching have suffered because of this:



Notice? All the subway line connections are shown running up and down, except for line 6 [ed. originally appeared as line 7]. (On a few maps, line 6 is parallel but other maps show line 6 at an angle.)

At first I went with the safe assumption: the map maker was just drunk and no one noticed. This is Korea.

Then I went with my default mantra: there is never a ratlional reason for anything in Korea. Just accept "Because this is Korea".

Today it clicked. Line 6 is the World Cup Line. The person making the map wasn't drunk. The angled lines are supposed to symbolize a V. V for Victory.

Or maybe not.

Sorry to be a pedant, but I reckon you mean line 6....

Pshaw! Someone apparently hasn't been keeping up with his Dan Brown. That V clearly symbolizes the Holy Grail. Mary Magdalene's sarcophagus is burried somewhere under line 7 (or 6, whichever.)

did you find that out from a source or is this conjecture?

i'm trying to think of another reason for it, and you're right, it drives you crazy. the only think I can think of is that line 6 is the only subway line with one-way stops (on the loop part) but that doesn't really explain it at all.

음.. 좀 황당한 질문이지만


대부분 갈아타는 역에서 노선 모양은 화살표로

이렇게 되어 있잖아요



그런데 지하철 안에서 삼각지 역을 보면

V

{역} 이렇게.. 음... 양쪽으로 다른 호선이 나온게 아니라



위로 V 자 모양으로 다른 호선이 뻗어 있더라고요;;;



분명 서울시 지도를 보면 십자모양으로 다른 호선이 겹쳐있는데...



왜 지하철 안의 노선표에서는 위로 양갈래가 뻗어있는지..

고맙습니다~!

지하철 노선도와 일반 지도와의 차이점부터 짚고 넘어가 보아요.



각종 길과 구조물들이 넓게 펼쳐져 있는 열린 공간에서는 그것들의 정확한 위치와 상대적인 관계가 매우 중요합니다. 하지만, 드문드문 나 있는 역에서만 밖으로 나오거나 교차지점에서만 넘겨갈 수 있는 선형구조인 지하공간에서는 정확한 위치같은 것은 중요한 것이 되지 않습니다.



즉, 노선도에서는 역과 터널들의 위치가 정확하지 않아도 지하철을 갈아타거나 내리고 싶은 역에서 내리는데 아무런 문제가 되지 않습니다.



그러면 굳이 실제의 모양과 비슷하게 할 필요가 없이 한눈에 쉽게 들어오고 깔끔해서 보기도 좋은 디자인, 즉 역은 동그라미로, 길은 죽죽 뻗은 직선으로 그려주게 됩니다.



그리고 위와 같은 이유로 경부복선전철이나 4호선 등은 접혀서 그리게 됩니다.





한 역에서 위로V자,양쪽으로 일자로 만나는 경우는

먼저 생긴 쭉 뻗은 모양의 노선이 있는 상태에서 위에 새로 생긴 다른 노선이 나란히 가다가 둘이 만나는 경우 (그림 참고) X자로 교차하게 그리면 매우 복잡해지게 됩니다.



굳이 X자로 교차하게 그려야 한다면 十자로 만난뒤 한쪽끝이 180도 돌아서 선 하나를 또 교차한 뒤 90도 휘어서 제자리로 가야하는 불상사가 일어나고 맙니다.



그러나 굳이 그렇게 그릴 필요는 전혀 없습니다.



실제로는 X자로 교차한 후 죽 돌아 올라가는데 미관상 노선도를 간단하게 그렸을 수도 있고 실제로 살짝 휘어서 붙었다 떨어져서 각자 갈길을 가는 경우인데 노선도를 그리다 보니 경사가 급해진(마치 V자처럼) 것일수도 있습니다.



노선도를 그릴때는 그런 것보다 역과 역들이 어떻게 연결되어 있는지 알기 쉽게 그리는게 우선입니다.



차를 타고 앉아있는 승객들은땅밑에서 뱅글뱅글 돌든 오르락내리락하든 신경쓰면 머리만 아프지 빨리가는 것도 아니기 때문입니다



나란히 가다 만나는 상황 예시:

정리하자면 노선도는 역들의 연결상태가 중요한 것이지 자세한 위치는 거의 상관이 없기 떄문에 그림은 가장 간단한 형태를 띄게 됩니다.

I live on the one-way loop on line 6 so I'm expertly qualified to comment here.

It's a mistake. No logical explanation for it (except mistake). Line 6 goes east and west at 삼각지 so for the map to suggest it goes one way twice is clearly a nonsense. The v-shape is rather a mystery though.

Yeah I tried to translate it and the grammar of the reply post is so confusing... I just gave up about half-way through. Basically, I think it says the purpose is to help you understand where to exit because the area has a lot of important buildings and can be confusing.

I could be wrong. My Korean sucks arse.
