Starting a new thread about F-5 since a few of us seems to be getting it now.

So I went in yesterday to get mine done. It should be noted that I am a foreign woman married to a Korean man.

There is a HUGE difference between the application for men and women, it seems.

For a start, they didn't ask us to show them any financial proofs that we can support ourselves. They just want an employment certificate from my husband.

Then it's the usual hojockdongbun, joomindenglok, about 5 forms to fill in and the one thing that I didn't read before is that they gave us a blank piece of paper to draw a map of the location of our residence, claiming that someone will be visiting us?!

Tres bizarre. But I've applied for it. The guy there says it'll take 2-3 months, but I don't think I believe him.

So, what's the deal about visitation by immi? Anyone heard of that???

I guess they're checking that you actually live in the same house. Kepp us up to date as to how everything goes and Good Luck with it all.

I'll be applying for mine next year.

One form to fill out (or was it two), no interview, no visit. Took a month to get my card.

The main one for me is that I won't ever have to renew my visa again. Nor is there a need to get multiple reentry, which saves time and money.

Congrats... and to think, in another 3 years you can vote in the local elections too...

I got the impression from mine that the "interview" was a formality and 2 weeks later the card was ready to pick up. The guy at the office just complained about how many chinese people were trying to get residency, then asked me if I knew any "Illegal teachers" here in Korea- of course I dobbed everybody in from this board...

The convenience is good, no re-entry permits required and no renewals. My employer wondered what it was though, they'd never seen one before.

I have been married to a Korean for more than 3 years. Am I eligible for the F-5? I presently have an E-7 visa.

You need an F-2 for 2 years before you can apply for an F-5. I, too, was on an E-7 when I got married and immi suggested that I should get an F-2 for permanent residency 5 years down the road (then). Rules changed last year from 5 years to 2.

I suggest you get your F-2 pronto.

You mean an F5 right?

Do you get a different ID card with an F5? Like something you can use to register online and stuff?

Lucky you. I went to immigration 3 times to renew my E2 visa and the immigration officers only suggested that I let my wife do all the talking because they didn't understand my Korean or English, and neither could I understand theirs. I would have never known about the F-2 if it wasn't for this place. The articles that appeared in the local English language press gave me the impression that a foreign resident only needed to reside in Korean for 5 years with their Korean spouse to get the F-5 (I know, information is only as reliable as the source--in this case, not very much).

Yes, you are right. I meant F-5. My op changed to reflect the error. Thanks.
