Internet webcasts are easy and cheap and live... but not portable.
"Podcasts" are not live and not cheap and not easy... until you get going.

Radio is great if you are in a market that has the format you prefer...in a language you can deal with. For now, I'll be reproducing my favorite radio stations through podcasts. |

| Would this European ad fly in North America, Van? Funny. As conservative as Korea was until last Thursday, I can actually see this ad flying HERE before the U.S. or Canada. |
Push her buttons.
It perhaps too graphically isolates attention on the genital region for the sensibilities of the American and Canadian public in general, especailly religious and feminist groups. Understandable.
I could see it as a magazine ad. Not a billboard there though. |
I agree with all of that.
That was exactly the problem in 'translating' this ad outside of Europe -- the anatomical focus. But to be fair though, this wouldn't fly in many parts of the world, not just N. America. And while it does fly in Europe (eastern & western) there has been some flak from religious and women's rights groups. But I don't see SONY as having to contend with those groups in East Asia. Here it would be more a Confucianist respectability, the one that censors & blurs parts of films as not being socially/culturally copacetic. But those are eroding, those forces.

You like what you like but somene who thinks Boa is more than the most boring type of imitation western pop can seriously dis 'all the people on her campus and their moms' with ipods as 'uncool'? I bet their moms at least have a decent CD collection. Exactly how many decades behind is K-pop? I can't remember that far back.
By any chance did you mention mpio because they're another Korean company?
From their website: "MPIO is the leader in bringing innovate digital audio and multimedia device to the consumer market."
But of course, it's obvious from their attention to minutia. |

| First off Zulu, just want to apologize for leaving you alone with the wolves for so long. I've been jumped on more than once in the Tech forum (where this should be actually) for defending my Mac. This one is...unusually civil so far though, it's not been too rough. |
Ah no problem my man. I get this all the time from some of our coworkers. Why don't you buy iRiver? Samsung is global leader. Why don't you buy Korean? You know, our tech is number one in [insert country here]. But Korean people don't think foreign technology is so good. Blah blah blah. Talk about cults! They just won't let up. There're probably a couple from work posting on this forum.
By the way, I notice you said you get 6-7 hours play on your Mini. Good news, on the 5 Gen I can get 3-4 hours video and if I adjust the backlight and EQ settings I can squeeze about 18-22 hours nonstop music out of the thing, that's without an upgrade battery (some are claiming 50 hours with this, but I haven't installed one, no need). A huge improvement out of the 2 Gen I used to have. |

MY MPIO works fine and the manual is in clear and grammatically correct English (I can't speak to the Russian or Portuguese but the Spanish and French look fine too).
Maybe instead of worrying about the website we could talk about something a little more germane to the discussion?
How about the colour of the packaging, for example?
Q: How many non-Apple mp3 players have you owned, zulu? How many have you used?
My problem with the apple acolytes is this:
while I can see Apple as being one of the better alternatives to the many MP3 devices out there, and I can recognize that Apple may very well be the best choice for some people, the fact that Apple is not the best choice for me- and others like me- for very clear and well-documented reasons (price, battery, and the need to load a software interface being the biggest three) would appear to be akin to heresy according to them. If Apple is the best for them, then it must follow that Apple is the best for everyone, and apostasy must be stamped out at all costs.
The same argument applies to computers.
It's no wonder people talk about the "cult" of Apple. |

A: Read back a bit. I've had an iRiver and a Yepp
(and some little 1 GB thing I can't remember the name of).
If you look at the percentage of foreign cars on the road, the 'massive variety' of foreign newspapers not available here (unlike say, Bangkok or Hanoi), the lack of interest in foreign food, the Korean media's incessant attempts to promote all Korean products as 'world's best', world number one, etc. , the same endless hype over the supposed 'Korean Wave' ad infinitum, the idea of a 'Mac Cult' becomes laughable by comparison.
People like Mac stuff because they (gasp!) actually think its much better that what they've used before, not because of where its made or because the Moonies got to them. The whole 'Mac Cult' cliche is pretty tired and desperate sounding. Can you get some new material? |

I think Mac users have a right to be a little defensive. The PC users have probably never walked in to a computer store and been sneared at when asking if some piece of hardware or software was Mac compatible. I've been looked at like I was retarded on more than one occasion by the friendly CompUSA, OfficeMax, Circut City or Best Buy sales associate. It's akin to being racially profiled or discriminated against in the tech world. This whole "cult of Mac" is nothing more then us responding to the constant criticism we get from the other side of the table.
For some reason, Apple is always a target for these kinds of attacks. No one snears at you for what kind of juice you buy in the store, or what brand of DVD player you bought. Case in point: When was the last time you saw a thread go on for 6 pages started by a Mac user who hated Windows? Or any Anti-Windows thread on this forum. I can go back and find three or four in the Tech forum bashing Apple in some form. A 114,000 known viruses for Windows (according to the funny commericial, anyway) and no threads about it, just people asking for help on the board about how to salvage their personal files. But Apple gets 2 or 3 viruses that really aren't viruses at all and one of them was exploiting a hole that was patched months before the virus was released, and there's a thread about it on Dave's right away screaming about how Mac's suck, haha told you so, you got a virus, nah-nee-nah-nee boo-boo!
For me at least, I can't imagine anyone truly enjoying a Window's experience, just based on the experiences I've had. If the person is open to the idea, I let them know there are alternatives. If they're in the market, I say "well, I've got a Mac, and I've been using a Mac for so many years and can count the problems I've had on one hand" yadda yadda. If they want to know more, I tell them, if they want to keep the PC, I say "okay, well good luck with that virus/formatting/driver/third party application problem, I'll see you around. Sorry I can't help you, my computer doesn't break, I don't know how to fix your 2 month old Dell."
Window's works for you, keep on trucking. As the saying goes, 'Never try to teach a pig to march. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.'

In it's prime, I could get in the neighborhood of 15 hours or so of play time. I've used it pretty much daily since I got it, almost a year and a half ago, and the wear and tear is starting to show in the battery life. It will hold me for now, but I would like to upgrade sometime by the end of the year. Maybe I'll treat myself to a nice christmas present. My next big purchase will probably be a laptop. The only question is do I want to get the 13 inch MacBook or hold out a little longer and get the 15 inch Pro. It'd be nice if they had a 15 in. MacBook that was somewhere between the two. Either 1200 bucks or 2 grand. It's a big jump.

yup, i'mma diss them because they are not cool.
i got mpio because it was the cheapest mp3 player at best buy when i bought it in february 2004...and it has a slot for a memory card.
it's only 128MB, but it has served me well these past few years...and while i have to change the battery, it does get pretty good playtime. |

Well I'm sure the millions of people with k-pop free ipods (and their moms) will be devastated by that revelation.

Same here. Macbook has the price, and the size to be a subway or air rider. But the pro 15 is light too and has the dedicated graphics and stuff, while the 17 has firewire 800. damn them to hell - they make it too difficult to choose and then come out with something even better a few months down the road. |
