Sounds like you need to get out more. Let me guess - you'd go to Bangkok or Paris to make fun of all the foreign people who would actually choose Thailand or France over Myungdong and Kyungju?

Clearly, your K-oolness has no bounds.

Abby's Book Nook and Thai Orchid. It has been over a year since I have been there, is Abby's still around?

Some friends and I would head up on a Sunday afternoon for a book/electronics and supper run. Some would head to Yongsan or technomart, the rest of us would head to Abby's. We would all meet up for supper at the Thai Orchid. GREAT food there. Then hit Hannam Mart and the deli there and back home.

There are some other great restaurants there too.

I don't go for the nightlife. Tried it, didn't like it, I go to places in my city or elsewhere in Seoul. Doesn't mean it is not for anyone else though, just not for me.

Well-priced variety.

Itaewon isn't 100% vanilla, but the main reason so many people hate it is because it's kewl to do so. It's the mark of a sophomore expat. Pefect for pulling rank on the newbs.

I mean, what's so great about the hundreds of homogeneous, cookie-cutter "dongs" with a Beer Cabin, an LG25, and a Paris Baguette? The air? I doubt it. Less seedy? Maybe on the surface, but isn't there a room salon tucked away somewhere in your hood? A 2-poled barbershop?

Itaewon is interesting. So is Hongdae. Kangnam and Apkujeong have their good points, but they're overpriced and image obsessed (especially Apku).
Other than that, it's a whole lot of the same thing over and over and over.

you used to be able to buy gudang garam, indonesian clove smokes, at the bali restaurant. but now they don't sell 'em. so i don't see any reason to go to itaewon anymore. make your own curries, satays, whatever, at home. and finish the meal with your last gudang garam.
