Of course. But the world has more footy competitions than the WC.
I'm not the first person to notice that Aussies play football like they do rugby. Rough and tumble, with a wee sprinkle of skill. They play with no finesse.
They'll get schooled when they play Brazil.

Ok mate
Oh, forgot to ask, who are you supporting in the WC? |

I became a fan of Ronaldo while living in Bara prior to and during WC02. I became a fan of Ronaldinho while living in Bara during 02 La Liga. Since I'm not much for fascist propagandists, I enjoyed the rivalry with Real Madrid.
I'll be going with Brazil. They play with skill and unrivaled class. I find that infinitely more enjoyable than watching thugs trotting around bowling people over. Of course, Japan, like Argentina, can often engage in histrionics, but that doesn't negate the brawling of the Aussies.
Namaste.

Sorry, but I'm unable to imagine Rugby played with finesse. Just what kind of pansy rugby players were you thinking of?
Anyway, prancing around the pitch like a bunch of fairies means nothing if you can't score the goals to win the match. Well done to the Aussie team for their victory. They deserved it. |

Play rugby when you play rugby. Play football when you play football. Good football does not include rough and tumble play. Like a fine game of 8-ball, skill and precision have value.
Australia seems more intent on aiming for the shin than the ball. That doesn't strike me as a "deserving" team - even if Japan sucked harder.

Yes it does! I really enjoyed watching Australia. As Spinoza said it was a lot like watching a good sleeves-rolled-up performance by a mid-table Premier League team like Blackburn, Bolton or Everton. |

| I'll take it one step further: Anyone notice the "negative" news about the US that were broadcast just before the American team's game? War in Iraq, Korea-US FTA, can't remember the third. Three stories only, all of which could be perceived as being negative, all of which involve the US. |

As I understand it, it's a broadcast in Korean for Koreans, so why should there be impartiality? |
Because it's an important part of sport, a tradition called sportsmanship, and an important part of classy sports broadcasting.

It's like when you listen to a sports broadcast on the local radio, there's no pretense of impartiality |
There definitely is in New Zealand, as there should be. The announcers might very slyly let you know who they would like to win, but that's it. They will call the game properly and fairly. And the tv footage will reflect that too. And the sport audience don't just expect that, they demand it. |
call it properly and fairly? they're announcing it, not refereeing it. what does sportsmanship have to do with the announcers?
when a broadcaster knows he's broadcasting for fans of both teams, he should try to be impartial so as to not annoy one side or the other. but i've never heard of a local broadcaster trying to hide the fact that he wants the home team to win. it'd be silly. |
