Does anyone know what the import allowance is on mail? Even a rough estimate. I've been trying to convince my mom to just mark it "50$" but nothing doing.

so does anyone know how much is free?

If it's coming from your mom, I think it should be fine anyway. have her mark it as a gift, and that should exempt it from any import taxes

If she is sending you a package... have her get the green customs clearance sticker from the postoffice.
-On the sticker have her briefly list the contents,
-Check the box that says it is a gift and
-Place the value at or UNDER USD$100.

Your duty free should be $400 but I have heard of people getting clipped for duties on shipments over $100. This may have been overseas purchases rather than stuff from home.

I have never paid import duties on stuff that was labeled "gifts" on the customs clearance tag and valued at $100(USD) or less.

Hope that helps.

Last month, I ordered clothes from several stores and had the stuff shipped to my sister-in-law. She boxed everything up into one package and marked the box as gifts. However, she did insure the box for $400 because that is about what the value was. I didnt have to pay any duty on it when it arrived.

I did it this way because last year I order some things from a shop and the total was just over $100. I ended up paying close to $50 in duty fees when the box arrived.

Like what was already suggested, just have her make the box gifts.
