I was so stupid today!

I shipped a suitcase of my clothes home to Vancouver by ground so I won't have to lug them on the KTX to the plane in a few months. At first they hummed and hawed b/c it was so big, but eventually they wrapped the whole thing in paper and tape.

I marked it as a gift, then crossed it out and marked it as 'merchandise.' Put the value as $400. I forgot you're supposed to mark as 'gift' to avoid taxes.

Are customs gonna charge me an exorbitant amount? Can I argue that they are all my USED winter clothes (half my wardrobe!) and open to show them they are not new items for resale or something?

God damn, I hate bureaucratic cash cows.. my biggest peeve!

</end shriveled old grandmother rant>
