If I recall, The Clash opened for The Who in Detroit during their very first farewell tour in the early '80s. Detroit, being a w a n k e r rock town, reportedly booed The Clash through their whole set. |

I think the White Stripes and the Von Bondies have changed that a bit.
But that's interesting. What great rock acts have come out of Detroit?
Where was Kiss from?
I thought the Who reunion was in the late 80s. |

Rock/punk groups don't seem to impact politics the way they used to (and it's arguable that they ever played a decisive role ...) Even a righteous act like Bruce Springsteen couldn't influence enough voters to win crucial mid-west states for Kerry (or maybe he did ...)
(Note my crafty steering of this thread away from the "Cut the Crap" theme...) |

Then again, Bono toured Africa with Bush's first treasury secretary and there IS an appropriate CE topic about Neil Young.
And, let's steer it back proper:

According to the Forum Index, the "Current Events" forum is intended "For politics/current events/news discussion"...
Politics, as you know, is a very broad term. Here are Merriam-Webster's definitons:
1 a : the art or science of government b : the art or science concerned with guiding or influencing governmental policy c : the art or science concerned with winning and holding control over a government
2 : political actions, practices, or policies
3 a : political affairs or business; especially : competition between competing interest groups or individuals for power and leadership (as in a government) b : political life especially as a principal activity or profession c : political activities characterized by artful and often dishonest practices
4 : the political opinions or sympathies of a person
5 a : the total complex of relations between people living in society b : relations or conduct in a particular area of experience especially as seen or dealt with from a political point of view <office politics> |
Rock and Roll interests are certainly in competition for influencing government (and individuals and groups...) and many topics related to sociology of Rock have political implications.

"Fiveeagles" links this particular thread topic and poll question to a recent book that he's read. |
No, he says he read it a couple of years ago.

I think it's suitable for posting in either the "Current Events" or "Off-Topic" forums. (Of course, there are vocal critics who are intolerant of any religious themes at OT also...) |
He says he read a book a couple of years ago and the heaven thread is not about politics. It's about religion.
Would you post a poll about whether people believe in Krishna in the Current Events Forum?
And you have no business calling me an "extreme secularist" for asking you not to post here. If you look back, I've even asked you questions about your religion. I really don't mind you discussing religion. I do have a problem with you moving your OT discussion to CE, where it has no place. I'm not intolerant of religion. I'm intolerant of you moving your discussion over here. Why not move it to the tech forum? Many believers use technology. Likewise, how about if some techie decides he's gonna come proselytize about Linux on this forum?

I'll continue to use my own discretion as to what and where I post and rely on forum authorities to sort things out when there's a real problem. |
As will I. |

It's unrealistic to think that you can keep God out of politics - unless you think that God is unreal (or you just hate God...)
Liberal and/or extreme secularism often is used to attack religious beliefs. In the EU, secular elitists barred someone from becoming commissioner because of his Catholic views while seeing no problem with an atheistic former Communist...

Separation of church and state needs to be maintained to check sectarian interests (especially when they are irrational and ignorant...) but non-sectarian spiritual values (reflecting faith in one supreme God known by whatever name) should be promoted by allowing relatively harmless religious expression (including headscarves worn by Muslims...) in any public place or forum...
Propagation of atheistic ideas should not be promoted by government because of the spiritually harmful effect on society. There is a compelling public interest in promoting the spirtitual welfare of society which outweighs individual or sectarian group interests in promoting godlessness. An atheist's right not to be bothered by a Jehovah's Witness knocking on his door is superseded by the latter's right to practice his (or her) religion and to canvas and share it with others. There's bound to be a "Clash" between theists and atheists (but the Constitution and core values of America are theistic ...) |
