The scene: Just after dawn. January 1, 2000. Haeundae Beach, Busan.
The shoreline is a swarming, teeming mass of humanity. Some 500,000+ revelers had spent the night imbibing large quantities of soju, eagerly awaiting the 1st sunrise of the New Millenium.
After the dawn, the cheering, the firworks, the morning swims - what happens then? Nothing much, except everyone tries to leave. At once.
The exit we headed to was certainly wide enough to accomodate a large throng of people making a mass exodus; rather, it would have been had some moron not parked his car there, right smack dab in the middle of a clearly marked "No Parking" zone. The said exit was now wide enough only for two rows of single-file pedestrian traffic, one on each side of the immovable object.
Or, so it would seem...
By the time we got there, the car was a wreck. Untold dozens of people had trampled over the offending blockade. Windows cracked and crazed, hood and roof dented and scratched beyond belief, side mirrors dangling or missing altogether.
Sympathy for the owner was in short supply that morning, my friends. I only wish I could have been there to see his face when he returned to his chariot. |

Burning down a guard house after a high school football game = normal.
Denting the hood of a car after a world cup game = extreme.

| Well. Hopefully the car owners had a decent insurance policy. I dunno. Do insurance policies protect against vandalism? |

the Koreans in LA are mellow however. in 2002, when korea lost, the koreans went home... without causing any problems. LAPD said it was a pleasure working the event.
on the other hand...
the LAKERS fans in LA ... even if they WIN a CHAMPIONSHIP... they will riot. hmm... they win, and still riot? hmm.
btw, about 10 years ago, after the chicago bulls won their 3rd straight title, there was a riot... and it left 3 people dead.
..not sure how many dead in los angeles. i remember i was eyed by a gang of bums (literally a homeless gang) while at a red light next to macarthur park around midnite. haven't been back since. |
