A long while back (1919) there was a (American) semi-pro football team called the Beloit Fairies (Fairbanks-Morse Company sponsored the team) The team actually beat the Green Bay Packers once.

Quote:
1919

Aug. 11 -The Green Bay Packers are founded as a semi-pro football team, representing the Indian Packing Co.

Sept. 14 -The Packers play their first game and trounce the North End Athletic Club of Menominee, Mich., 53-0. Quarterback Dutch Dwyer scores the first touchdown.

Nov. 23 -After posting 10 straight victories, the Packers lose their final game of the season to the Beloit Fairies, 6-0, at the Fairbanks-Morse Co. field in Beloit. A large contingent of Green Bay fans accompany the team on a special train. After the local referee disallows three Green Bay touchdowns, the Packers claim they were robbed and demand a rematch. (Beloit agreed, then canceled the game.)

well, i guess i'll grace this thread with more of my wisdom.

i agree that the expos is a terrible name. i don't even know what The Expo is. But at least it gave us the old "expos deez nuts!" joke.

the Charlotte Bobcats is a terrible name because i think, by federal law, every third high school in the country has to be called either the Bobcats or the Wildcats. we don't need an NBA team.

Minor League baseball is filled with terrible (but awesome) names like the Montgomery Biscuits, Modesto Nuts, Wilmington Blue Rocks (a blue rock? i mean seriously), Batavia Muckdogs, and even names that are ungrammatical (Chillicothe Paints) and misspelled (Brockton Rox).

I've always wondered, are the Anaheim Mighty Ducks named after that emilio estavez movie?

I've always felt that the Hyundai Unicorns could have done a lot better (oh no! Watch out for that unicorn! It will defeat us all!) Not only that, their mascot is unspeakably fruity, all fuzzy with a pink horn (pics to follow.)

yes, yes they are... Disney were major players in bringing the franchise to Anaheim, so they got to pick the name. obviously looking at their pockets while they picked that one... Rolling Eyes

I remembered my disbelief when this all happened. Tried to write some clever twist on "truth stranger than fiction" but just got depressed and repressed it.

Don't forget the Minnesota Gophers.

Quote:
Houston Texans- Why the feck would you name a team after a bunch of guys who aren't even from Texas? Really, how many people do you think are on the team that are actually from Texas? Probably five or six...tops. That means this is just a huge false advertisement. The team should just change their name to the Houston We Roll Over and Die Each Season...

As for the Ducks name, it's actually the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Next season, they're changing it to Anaheim Ducks, which isn't much of an improvement, but how much worse is Ducks than...the Penguins?

My hometown - officially designated and registered as "Hockey Town Canada. The Ottawa Valley's main industry was lumber years ago. My father was the captain of the team in the 50's. I blew out my knee playing football in high school so I couldn't play.

A team we played in minor hockey had MUSKRAT for their team name, Voyageurs was the nickname. It was a team made up of small towns.

I think Montreal Canadiens is a strange name due to the fact that most French hate the English in Canada. Should be called Montreal Quebeckers.
