This is for all you experts out there.

I need some information about doing a new E2 Visa. It has been a few years since I have had to do this as I stayed for 3 years the last time I was there. Almost all the postings are now asking for "Original Sealed Transcripts" I did not have to provide this before. I was able to have all my paperwork photocopied and notarized by a lawyer. I am not willing to pay the University to forward this information possibly multiple times at the prices they charge. I was able to provide the originals once I arrived at the immigration office when I filed for my Alien card. It was not a problem then and I don't understand how it could be a problem now.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I would hate to give up teaching in Korea because they have that little trust in a legally signed and sealed copy of my paperwork.

Is there a way around this?

Since the crackdown and scandal last year. it has been a requirement that ALL E2 visa applications MUST have a University sealed, official transcript and an EMBASSY certified copy of your degree as well as a signed copy of the contract.

There is NO way around this requirement.

You only need one per year and that is for the visa application. Do not send one for each job you enquire about.

Question. I'm all set for my first teaching gig in Korea, got my visa, got my ticket. Does the above mean that, should I decide to stay another year at the same school, I'll still need to go through the whole damned process? There's no mechanism in the system to renew without all the hassle?

When I went to get my sealed transcripts, I had them sealed with the university stamp (I went to a new university which doesn't stand with much pomp and ceremony, and as far as I know, they don't actually HAVE a seal for transcripts (we didn't even have a shield, for heaven's sake - we had a hologram as a logo instead)). I spoke to the Korean Consulate in Sydney and they were okay with that.

Some universities will do a bulk deal where you pay full price for the first copy of your transcript and then less for each one after that.

Its over $300 plus mailing to get one copy from my stupid University. It is also 3000 miles from my home. Is there no way to have a colour photocopy of the original sealed and notarized by a Lawyer here in Canada. I have only one original and I am not giving it away. I will present it if need be but it is not leaving my possession. I have emailed the Consulate in Toronto but no reply as of yet other then the email has been delayed from the postmaster. I will try to telephone in the morning to ask additional questions.

Why will I not pay $300? or Why is the email to the consulate email delayed?

As far as paying the cash. I have an authentic transcript and can have it notarized along with the rest of my paperwork for free. It worked for three years before and I am sure if they save any records I should already be on their file somewhere.

The email, I have no idea what the delay is. I sent it yesterday and today I Received a postmaster email telling me it was delayed but not to resend my original email.

The LAW (government policy) says you must submit a sealed official transcript. You can play whatever games you want and argue here until you are blue in the face but I am sure that the Korean government / immigration won't change the law just to suit you. Bite the bullet and get the transcripts or try Japan/Taiwan.

BTW, what uni in Canada demands $300 for an official transcript? Any of the unis I attended (3 degrees and 4 unis over a dozen years) only charge between $5 and $25 each for an official transcript (signed, sealed and delivered). They get requests for them all the time.

Shocked Wow. I never knew that some universities charge $300 for a transcript. What exactly is the rationale for charging that amount of money?

I just went the university that I attended this week to pick up my transcripts. The total was $50 for ten copies. They were very nice when I informed them of what was required. They put each in an envelope, sealed it, taped it, stamped it, signed it, and imprinted the envelope with the school crest. I have never dealt with immigration so I did not want to take any chances.

You can get loads more done when you are nice and considerate to the employees. Half of the students go in throwing a temper tantrum and acting like children. I went in smiling and said, "Hello, Ms. Eleanor. Would you please help me with a small problem that I ran into?" She made my transcripts exactly the way I asked and even got my diploma expedited! Very Happy

I went to my university a couple of days ago (Carleton in Ottawa) and got three official transcripts in three sealed and stamped envelopes for free. They did it right in front of me. $300 is ridiculous.

Korea has definitely got tougher on this stuff this year. Last year I gave them an official transcript without the envelope and they accepted. This year they wanted a sealed transcript to get my degree notarized AND I have to send two to Korea. It's crazy.

I'm glad my university and the embassy are all in the same city!!

Unfortunalty I attended a private University. They informed me that they will not even do these sealed transcipts for me. They provided me with a copy with my diploma and that is that. I am really F***ed aren't I. They informed me that if I wanted one copy of my transcripts for my own use they would charge me $195 US Funds for the request plus $40 US Funds for the official transcript plus $20 US Funds to ship it to me. $255 US Funds is about $300 Canadian Funds. The University as I think I mentioned before is over 3000 miles away from my home now.

Expensive paper mill....

Then I guess your options are pay the cash or choose another country to play in.

Good luck either way.

It's a new rule, thanks to those who think they are too good to get a REAL degree and come here with fake ones. A few ninkumpoops make it harder for the rest of us.

Yes, every year, it's the same damned process, if you change schools, that is. I only had to have the fingerprints taken once, but every time I change schools, it's the same process. You'd think they'd kkep your info on file. They haven't figured out how to do that, I guess. Wink
