Hey, I'm a newbie here and and am considering some teaching positions in Korea. Have been reading posts on this forum for a few weeks now and have enquired about a few jobs.
Qns:
1. If I can get a salary of about 2.2-2.4k (I have o/s teaching exp) how much could I reasonably expect to be able to save on a monthly basis?
I am single, don't live a partying lifestyle and am fairly frugal w my money.

2. This whole thing about original Diploma/Teaching Cert and original sealed copies of transcripts from my university.
I graduated a while ago now and have never heard of this.
What do I really need to provide a recruiter/school/emploer to get hired in a decent job there?
Can I provide "copies" of my certificate? I presume the "transcript" needs to be original from my University in Australia.

Any other advice on reliable recruiters/employers would be a bonus

Cheers

Me thinks you should spend a day or two reading the FAQs.

Unless you are working for a public or international school it is highly improbably that a newbie in Koea will get 2.2-2.4m. If you are at a hakwon then 2.0-2.1 is probably more realistic. They are NOT really interested in your experience.

You can live a very comfortable lifestyle and still save 1.0-1.2 on an income of 2.0m.

In regards to your diploma and transcripts.... It is the immigration office who makes the rules NOT the recruiter.

For your diploma you will need to submit either one of:
1) Your original certificate OR
2) A Korean embassy certified copy of your original.

You will also need to submit a University SEALED original/official transcript.

The copy of your teaching certificate if it is different from your University degree can be just a copy.

You should have no trouble getting 2.2 if you look good and your sound is acceptable to the Korean ear.

You should be able to save at least 1.6 million per month if you are as frugal as you say.

You can probably make more if you work in Seoul, but you can save more if you work outside of Seoul.

Well, I spent 300,000 won this weekend, and I didn't do jack squat. Used desk and book shelf, a Costco visit, Korean listening text, strings for my bass ... nothing lavish, but there went 300k.

I don't know. I "save" about 1 million a month. I'm not frugal, though.

I saved a million won every month without even trying. That was on a 2 million won a month salary. Really, food and alcohol is about all you need to spend money on. Both are pretty cheap.

i net 1.9. i send 1.3 to my family every month. I'm in the country, so that helps, but i eat well, drink too much, smoke too much, buy the things i need and want within reason, and take the occasional trip to the big city.
if i wanted to be a crazy saver with my budget (no smoking and drinking), i could probably send home 1.5 or 1.6.

easily

and that's with dinners out four to five times a week, movie theatres, bus and motel costs for weekend travels... seriously.... the only months I spend anywhere near to my whole pay are months when I bought THINGS (a computer, a ton of DVDs, books, clothes, latest mobile phone), WESTERN FOOD AND DRINKS (gawd can this add up - luckily, it doesn't happen often, as I like to eat Korean food out in restaurants - and there IS quite a variety, a different dish a day for a whole month easily if you learn the cuisine) and JAPAN (a weekend there can blow away a month's pay if one isn't careful).

Remember that "being frugal" means changing your purchasing habits. Buying beef, cheese, rice and many canned goods may not be in the cards. Eating out in Korea restaurants for $4-$10 max is easy to do, batteries are cheap, intercity bus travel laughably cheap and good quality... yes, a frugal person will quickly see and change the contents of their shopping list here in Korea.

Start a thread and keep track of the "do's" and "don'ts". I'm not frugal so I'm pleasantly surprised that I can do many "expensive" things as judged by back home and still have half my pay sitting in the bank. Very Happy

If you like Korean and get a free apartment your monthly expenses excluding partying should be around 100,000 Won for utilities and 200,000-240,000 for food. As long as you stick to Korean food, Chinese, and McDonalds you can eat every meal out and spend 6,000-8,000 Won a day.

If you really want to save money, you should try for a job at the one English Village which has been advertising on Dave's. They are offering 2.6-3.2 million a month and I think they even provide free cafeteria meals.

As stated many times before it depends on your spending habits and priorities.

My first year year I saved over 24,000 Cdn and that wasn't very difficult, made easier by living in a town of about 200000.

This, my second year after 5 months I am on target to beat that mark considerably due to making a much higher salary and living in the sticks a village of about 20000.

Of course, I always choose to take on some overtime so that helps a great deal.

In my budget I spend about:

50,000 won on food
20,000 won on movies (a few videos and a movie or two a month)
100,000 on utilities/cell phone etc...

and...

250,000 on transport (I am taxi man and ride between cities like it aint no thang)

1,200,000 on beer and alcohol.

(Yes my food money is low; I get my nutrition from beer)

If I quit the drink and took buses I could probably save like 3million on my 2million salary.
