I plan to move to Korea next year, probably in spring or early summer. Can anyone recommend any good books on Korean culture that I can read before I go? I'm also looking for a few books on teaching. I have a B.A. in English and I have taught preschool but I don't have any official experience teaching English. I think one I've seen recommended on this site is Teach Yourself Teaching English As a Foreign Language by David Riddell. I'm also using the Teach Yourself book and cds to start learning Korean. I've heard it's not the best, but I had to start somewhere. I also plan to ask around the local university to see if there are any native speakers willing to tutor me.
I would appreciate any suggestions. And before anyone says it, yes, I tried the "search" function and I got a blank white screen. Of course, from the experiences I've had lately on this board, the blank screen was probably just as helpful as any results I would have gotten in a search.
Thanks in advance. Please help a newbie help herself. |

I dont know of any specific titles.
But, you could always go to your local university, locate the Englsih/ESL section and pick out a few books.
In regards to learning Korean, keep up with the CD's. Also, put out an adverstisement for a Korean speaking tutor. I am sure someone will respond. |

I'd recommend buying Teaching English to Koreans.
For cultural primers, despite getting mixed reviews due to its nationalistic undertones, I'd recommend Korea Unmasked. Once done that, a book that takes the gloves a lot better would be What's So Good about Korea, Maarten?. And if you want something that looks long and hard at the history of the expat community in Korea, then I'd definitely recommend Korea Bug. |

Thanks. And if anyone has a suggestion on a reliable Korean/English dictionary that would be great too. |
