lol!!! you've got to be kidding!! the best England could do in either case was a fragile stalemate.. they could barely save themselves in the short term.. USA to the rescue.. and in WWII thank the Soviets while you're at it.

You, sir, are a complete half-wit. The fact that you have a degree casts a very dark shadow of doubt over your country's educational system. Britain had to wait for the Americans from 1914 til 1917 and from 1939 til 1941. In 1940, Hitler launched a huge air rade of the island and was beaten. It's called the Battle of Britain and I suggest you do some reading (if you can). Hitler had conquered much of Europe and had Britain roled over, lubed-up and spread 'em like the rest, he may well have conquered the world.

I see there are a few Francophiles in the poll/thread thus far. Nothing wrong with that, if that's what you're into. Germany and northern Europe, Italy and Portugal are more my cup of tea. Had some lovely holidays in France when I was a kid (but never been to Paris). I've heard Parisians are the most arrogant people ever and the streets are full of dogsh1t - is this true? That Bridget Bardot is a stupid cow if you ask me....trashing the Koreans for eating cutesy doggy-woggies whilst her countrymen put live frogs in solution for long periods, chop their legs off, and then throw them in the trash (still alive, with no legs). I'd string her up.

I cannot stand French literature--the poetry lisps, buzzes and nasals like thin berry syrup dripping out of a hairy nose with one nostril clogged and whistling. Their philosophy is only one baguette length less barmy than that of the Germans, and their entire politics is based on whiningly maintaining a world power status they no longer deserve.

I'm American, and the only (ridiculous generalization wise for the sake of this OP) country's culture and politics I respect less than America's is France's. Balance of poweur my freckled Irish ass. Don't get me started on the odour of a Parisian bus in August.

On the other hand, what I would do for a night out with Irene Jacob and Julie Delpy. Lordy, lordy, oh my lord.

German philosophy hammers French philosophy. Kant, Nietzsche, Frege...very cool guys...and the best the French can do is Rousseau and his 'general will'! Pish.

Actually, I like Kant--but as I see it, the Germans had more potential and went all transcendental on everyone's ass. Pisses me off more, is what it does.

And Spin, did you not vote in your own poll?

No because I explained my position in the OP and it doesn't really fit either option.

"And we all know how much Proust saw with one simple dip of his madelaine....ummmmmmm "

Ummm. Surtout lorsqu'elles sont encore bien chaudes (I dip mine in coffee).

Well...not quite. As a general rule, I'd say they simply aren't as affable as the rest of the French, which is not to say that they are unapproachable. As for the dogshit, I rarely saw any.

In general I like the French a lot, the language, the beauty of France, the wine, the food, the wine, the museums, cafes, the architecture, folk music, and as VanIsle noted French women can be gorgeous.

On the down side rock music isn't their strongest point and trying to sell military technology to China and setting off nuclear weapons in the South Pacific is just not cool.

Still - I'll make the most of my time there this fall. Can't wait!

Sucketh all.

But then again, I am the philistine who thinks Dostoevsky is a pre-pubescent whiner: Awww, Fyodor, life sucks? People are mean and selfish? Really? Poor baby. Whatever.

We can invite Don Gately and have a 3-way cage match in defense of our Dave's-maligned favorite writers: Dosty for me, Hemingway for Don...and yours?

(Or maybe we could postpone the mayhem until the 1st annual Psychedelic Kimchi writers retreat.)

Sounds good, but for me: Mishima. (Not that he's been maligned yet...)

Suck on that, Russophile.
