It's funny. But I saw a ref sending two American's off for no reason. Italy got all the help possible, and they still couldn't beat a second-rate squad. |

I just want to win the world cup so we can hold it over the heads of you freaking limeys. After all, it's your national sport. But how many cups have you won? One? I think that's it.
Let's face it. Except for Germany, most European teams have no chance. The Krauts are the only ones who can match up with the South Americans.
Don't get all full of yourself, Englishman. You have about the same chance as America to win the cup. It's going to Brazil. And if it doesn't go to Brazil, it's going to the Krauts.
You know it, and I know it.
At least I have real football, baseball, and basketball to fall back on.

I'm in remission, but after my long-sojourn over-seas I'll probably still watch more NOLA games than any other team... not that that would be very many, but I'd easier qualify as a Saints fan than any other...
The worst team in professional sports - NOLA. But at least they've got style.
As for Katrina, a friend who was storing about $6,000 worth of my books saw his house flooded and my books destroyed. Some of them were rare texts from the early 1800's, so it seems doubtful they can be replaced. However, 3 different friends lost relatives, so the storm was anything but benign for me and mine.

| We had a lot of trees down, a little structural damage, but all in all my family was OK. I am flying to Gulfport in about a week from now. |

Are you really bringing up sailing? A sport only a very few follow and about 10 people in the world have enough money to particiapate in.

In rugby there is no hitting, no down field blocking whatsoever. In rugby you just arm tackle and wrap up the guy with the ball. Tn american football anyone and everyone is HIT on every single play. the difference between being wrapped up and taken down to being hit by someone coming at you full speed is tremendous. |

Well Im not a world class athlete. And rugby players DO NOT HIT. They arm tackle. And then only the guy with the ball. When I first learned the rules of rugby i was shocked that there was no down field blocking allowed. |

| OK, so you have an 18 stone forward running at you. You get hit when you make the tackle. You have to have your body in the way else the tackle will break. There's no downfiled blocking because rugby players use skill and ball handling instead of just pace and some big guys knocking people out of your way. |

Im not debating the merits of rugby vs. football as worthwhile sports. It was said that american football players are sissies for wearing helmets and pads. I say that they take a lot more potential damaging HITS, thus the use of protective gear. |

sorry to hear that. a lot of my relatives lost their houses, but we all felt super lucky that there was no loss of life.

actually, back home we just call it 'football'. it's the rest of the world that calls it 'american football', as they already had a sport they called (more appropriately) football.
something i've always been curious about... americans call it soccer. the rest of the world calls it football. where did the name 'soccer' come from. did americans make it up, or was it always called 'soccer' and 'football' interchangeably?
as for the 'american football' vs. 'rugby' thing... they're both played on a field and they have a funny shaped ball. that's pretty much where the similarities end. one is a stop-and-go game in which players wear protective equipment, and one is not. american football was a stop-and-go game well before the age of television advertisements. does that aspect of it facilitate the frequent insertion of commercials? certainly. was that what people were planning when they made up the rules to the game? doubtful.
