the website doesnt give a definite price for routes into the US, so i was wondering if anyone knew

a friend just flew out and had to pay over $100...that seems very unreasonable

(he had a little bit of a problem with his carry on (a lamp nearly the same size and shape that i was allowed to bring as a carry on a few months ago) and they made him check it. the lady then said the 11.7 kg carry on size bag he checked but then wanted to carry to avoid the extra fee weighed too much...just checked the website for that and the carry on limit is 12 kg)

so he paid 135 to check a 1 kg fragile box

Don't ever think of flying anywhere else but to USA. You will be stunned by the tiny allowances.

I got forked for 200 today. Admittedly, I was WAY over. I was at 42k, compared to the allowable 20. This was for an international flight.

Where the weight concept applies (everywhere except US/NA) the basic rule is 1 kg costs 1% of the one way first class fare.

a hint... check ahead and have a sob story. Sinagpore and Thai have doubled my luggage allowance by doing this.
Otherwise send stuff by snail mail.

actually now i'm quite stunned by this worker's incorrect interpretation of which bags should go where

also, i thought flights to the US had set costs for a 3rd checked bag (on the KAL website, it says stuff about 1% for other places, but not for US)

...so i was wondering if anyone new the set cost or if it is percentage, then the percentage for 3rd bag fees

i called a few weeks ago to ask about taking my mountain bike back to the US and they said it would have to be under 32kg and 158cm (totoal dimensional measurments). if it counts as a third piece of luggage then they said it would be 135,000 won.

so yeah, seems like anything extra might be set at 135?

conversely, it only costs 44,000 to ship my bike. if you can handle being away from some of your things, just ship them. it's way cheaper and much less hassle.

I agree with the sob story advice! I flew into Korea from the UK last week with Emirates and the excess baggage fee was 40/kilo which I guess is around $80/kilo.

I was 10 kilo over the paltry limit of 20 kilo but I was crying at the check in desk because I was upset to be leaving my family and so the guy at the desk let me off with it, I didn't have to pay anything.

It's a game of chance really. Excess baggage charges are largely left to the discretion of the check-in clerk.

I like some of the american carriers policies...

only 25 $ extra for overweight bags from 50-70 pounds.

I just flew home from Korea and my bags were WAY over the allowance. I was not prepared to fork out the fee for a third bag, but got nowhere with the clerk at the check-in counter who stubbornly repeated that there were no exceptions, and I would have to pay. I decided to try my luck with the "duty manager" she was very helpful, and without hesitation told me I could check a third bag without any extra charge as long as I was willing to sign a waiver releasing the airline from any responsibility for that bag if it was lost or damaged. So, if you are willing to do that, I suggest loading up a third bag with stuff that it won't break your heart on the off chance something happens, and asking for the same deal.

Yep, that sounds like 1% of the 1-way 1st class fare per kilo ....

when i flew in to incheon from auckland i was at 32 kg each piece!!
so when i was in auckland i had to take the day pack off my backpack and use that as handluggage in addition to my laptop/purse/duty free!!!
when i got to incheon to xfer they noted the extra weight and made an annotation on my ticket and let me go on my merry way no problems

Wink

23 kilos for eached bag checked in, not 46 total, 23 each, so pack things evenly... it was about $5 for every kilo you go over... one of my bags was 76kilos, you can imagine the pain that was.
