|
|
I was just offered a job at a camp paying 3.6 mill for 4 weeks of work, but out of that amount comes a 27% tax that has just been introduced. Is this for reaL? But the camp says they will pay half of the airfare to balance this. So basically the camp pays 2.6 and maybe add on 700 for airfare which is 3.3.......
I think a camp should pay at least 1 mill per week in any case. |

Guys who come in for camps USUALLY get burned. They promise you the world but never have to pay cause you are outta here when your visa expires and can't fight for your pay when they stiff you.
I know personally of about 70 people who were burned by summer camps and have NEVER known anyone who was employed for a camp on a C4 or H1 and left happy.
If anyone here EVER did a camp on a C4 or H1 visa and DIDN'T get ripped off I would love to hear from you.

well, i worked on one once and got what i was promised, but it wasnt much. but camps seem to be paying more now in any case. but i never had any tax like this taken off with the C4. i just wonder if it is bogus or not.
on the other hand, i wonder if its better just to cruise in on a tourist visa and work under the table. |

You worked for a summer camp IN KOREA with a C4 or H1 visa AND got what was promised??
I find that hard to believe.... but if you did in fact have that luck, then I am impressed... 1 in 70... still not great odds... I think I'll try something with better odds like the slot machines...

Probably not smart. Immigration seems to have wised up to the fact that busting camp workers is like shooting fish in a barrel. Tarnishes the rest of us working legitimately here too.
The exorbitant tax may be real -- there were some threads about that here last year. I dont have the definitive answer to your question but the Korean tax office should. Arm yourself with the straight goods & best luck dealing with camp directors. |

I coordinated a camp last winter for the Korea Economic Daily. We employed 41 teachers, E2 and C4 visa holders among them. I can tell you with certainty that as of February there was no extra tax imposed on C4 visas. |

I did a winter camp for the Kookmin Bank a couple years ago, on a C4 and got paid in full, with 5% tax off. So there are some legit ones out there. |

5% not quite legit....unless of course you were making 3-4 mil for the camp |

I know, but close enough! None of this 27% crap, that's for sure. |

My contract states 10% national tax will be taken out. I'm fine with that, considering it's less than a casual here in Australia is taxed for contract work. |

It is real. Remember if you're here for a year, the government is going to recapture a lot of the money you earn via other means like sales tax. If you're parachuting in, making some coin, and running out of the country, the government wants a larger cut. The visa probably is directed at workers like high priced consultants, entertainers, and things like that. It sucks but what can you do? |

Actually it isn't real. I told the school over and over again that it sounded a little bit off to me, and they were adamant that is was correct and took on a no-soup-for-you attitude about it. I didn't email them back and left them hanging about whether or not I wanted to work the camp, and just now I received an email saying "turns out we miscalculated, and the actual income tax is 6.5%..."
And even that seems a little high to me (by Korean stanadards I mean).
Anyways, no alarms and no surprises......please. |
