Following the reasonable logic of this post:

Having multiple World Cup threads is fine, but I vote we have just one thread on one forum per individual match. You know, instead of 5 or 6 little, poorly attended threads running around for every match. ("Here's the half-time score" thread, "Was yellow card fair?" thread, and "Where's the French defence?" thread)
What say? |
Here is my contribution to greater organization. Come here for all disussions of the Korea Republic's 2006 World Cup run. All matches and players can be discussed in one thread I reckon, but if something majestically grand or sinisterly foul takes place that warrants a new one, go get 'em tigers.
(Will post links to the relevant threads in a sec.) |

lady luck sings again for Korea...
#1: France should have been up 2-0...Korea's goalie WAS IN THE NET when he blocked that shot...ball was over the line!
#2: Korea's goal, and yes it was a goal, was the sloppiest shot I've seen all World Cup.
France dominated the game (and Koreans know it). France wasn't even that tight a team, particularly after watchin the Brasilians.
best of luck to TaeHanMinGuk...france will be lookin for points against Togo, and the Swiss defense won't be very forgiving. Korea looked terrible tonight.... |
Thanks for mentioning number 1, I thought nobody would and I would be banging on like an old madman this morning. Once again lady luck smiles on Korean fortunes at the WC. |
The ref had whistled for a freekick just as the ball crossed the line, apparently. Hence why there was no corner, and no goal, and no complaining from the French.
I didn't notive this at the time, but a match report somewhere mentioned it. I would have to see the sequence again to check the validity. |
Actually, I thought the same, until I went back and read the BBC report:
Patrick Vieira also looked to have scored, but the referee failed to give the goal, penalising Florent Malouda as he tried to force in the rebound.
That reads to me as though the shot itelf was fine, and the attempt at a rebound was what gave the foul away. Maybe. |
That article goes on to say:
| Quote: |
France should have had a second goal when Vieira's header clearly crossed the line, despite Lee Woon-jae's desperate efforts to keep the ball out.
When the ball came out of the goal Malouda lunged to reach it and in doing so he was penalised for fouling Ho Lee. |

Deutsh Welle has this to say:
| Quote: |
30. min.
A clear goal missed by the linesman
France have what they think is the second goal. Patrick Viera gets his head to a powerful cross and the ball looks to be a good 30 centimeters over the line when Lee Woon-Jae beats it out. |

Korea were hugely disappointing on attack, but their defence was (atypically) organised and resolute. Can't say they deserved the draw, but then neither can I say that French team deserved the win, either. Which means, the score line is justified, and thus - due to the vicious rules of logic - Korea DID deserve their draw after all.
Golly. |

Aha. They were annoyed:

We were denied valid goal, fumes Domenech
LEIPZIG, June 18 (Reuters) - France were denied a valid goal in Sunday's 1-1 World Cup Group G draw with South Korea, an angry Raymond Domenech said on Sunday.
'We did not score one goal but two,' the France coach told a news conference. 'The problem is that the referee only allowed us one.'
He was referring to a incident after 32 minutes at the Zentralstadion when a header by midfielder Patrick Vieira from a corner appeared to cross the line before Korean keeper Lee Won-jae pushed it out.
'We could have been and should have been and normally would have been 2-0 up,' striker Thierry Henry, who put France 1-0 ahead with a goal after nine minutes, told reporters.
'At that moment we were clearly putting them under pressure,' Domenech said. 'We did exactly what we had to. If that goal had been allowed, we would have been in control. That was clearly a turning point in the match.'
If Mexican referee Benito Archundia had given the goal the match would indeed have been a completely different story.
Instead, South Korea grabbed a late equaliser that left the French, who started with a dull goalless draw against Switzerland, in danger of another early exit after they failed to survive the group stage at the 2002 finals.
'Referees are pretty quick to give yellow cards for no reason but when it's about a proper referee's decision, I did not see one today,' Henry said.
He was referring to the second bookings of the tournament for left back Eric Abidal and playmaker Zinedine Zidane which means both will miss France's last group match against Togo.
'We didn't complain although we knew the ball was clearly in,' Henry said of the 'goal' that was not given. 'We had a clear penalty against Switzerland, the ball went in today. Things are not going our way.'
Domenech ruled out an official protest but said the incident should help convince world soccer's ruling body FIFA to introduce video to assist referees at major tournaments.
'We're not going to file a complaint but we keep saying that video is useful to help out referees,' the France coach said. 'Sadly, we could not benefit from it today.'
Vieira himself would not be drawn too much, simply saying: 'It's a pity but what can we do?'
When asked about the incident, South Korea's Dutch coach Dick Advocaat was silent for a moment, then said: 'The chance for Vieira? It was not a goal because the final score is 1-1.'

No, man, I didn't mean all World Cup threads should be unified into one thread, that's too cumbersome. Just one thread per individual match (at least while the damn match is still in progress) is what I had in mind. Otherwise we get the same comments & arguments showing up on five different threads, it creates too much redundancy, and wastes time trying to keep up with them all.
One match, one thread.

(I know.) But I have taken the idea farther by thinking this could handle Korea's run. Just Korea. If people don't want, they will do what they like. No skin off.
And this could end up a total disaster in need of abortion anyway, if certain competing posses start kicking and screaming up in here. |

Second.
I think this may be the most interesting group now in terms of the importance of the coming matches, especially with Togo threatening boycott on and off. Anyone know the final word on that yet? |

Di*k Advocaat??? Maybe he should change his name to Di*k Lee or Kim. Sounds like a typical Korean response. Be a man and tell the truth, he should have said "We were fortunate on that play." |

Where'd that go? That's the spirit we were looking for...
By the way, was anyone annoyed(if not surprised) that the Korean fans weren't sophisticated enough to hush a little for what may be Zidane's final exit? |

I never liked Zidane. Really, who cares about him? The world cup is for all fans of all the competing countries and their teams, not for Zidane. |

Flotsam, guess who's going to be in Germany next week? I've been known to go a bit crazy at family gatherings, esp. in crowded public places. Won't get into all the details now, but don't be surprised if I leave a little, um, "calling card" in the corner of the floor of one of the stadium bathrooms, beside which I'll leave a sign: "Patchy Was Here!" |
