In our building (university apartments) we have an ajuma who sorts everything every day. She has a set of tongs, and it takes half her day.
Most of us are good and sort our stuff before it goes out (my food wasted goes in a ziplock bag in the freezer till it is full- no slop!). But there are some who toss it in together, and never stop to notice how the ajuma spends half her day.
Hey, the food waste gets recycled. I'm all for it. Here you can't have a garbage disposal, and you must recycle the food waste: where I am from in the States, every house has a disposal, and it is against the neighborhood rules to compost the food waste.
And I am always reading here where people think it is the Koreans who are illogical! |

I got that idea of freezing food waste until the bag gets full from you, desultude. Now I don't waste a thing. Good advice. |

Desultude, after the freezer what happens? Do you defrost it a bit so it will slide into the bin? (Here, and I assume everywhere, we aren't supposed to throw the bags with the food garbage) What size of ziploc bags are you using and how many do you go through in a week or a month?
Your idea intrigues me.... I used to use one of those red things that makes all the water drain to the bottom, but it gets stinky really fast and I literally gag when it's time to throw it out. Ewwww.
Thanks! |

You just dump it out after it freezes. I don't use a ziplock bag, just the standard bags you get when you buy something at the convenience store. The frozen food doesn't stick to the bag or anything like that. |

I guess it wouldn't - - I think I was imagining frozen soup or something -- but yeah, that makes sense.
Thanks |

Recycling is a great thing. The problem with recycling food waste is frequently some meat bits get in the recycling process. Now that doesn't sound so awful except that those food wastes are often used as fertilizers and feed for cattle.
These animals SHOULD NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES eat any kind of meat product. That is why in the states and u.k. it is not permitted to recycle domestic (household food wastes or use meat byproducts as fertilizer.) There is speculation that this is how mad cow disease started.
Again recycling is great but food recycling should be done very judicially and hopefully this country has laws against domestic food wastes or bonemeal wastes being used as feed or fertilizer. Veg heads are not safe either because it was common practice for slaughter houses to sell dried blood as a fertilizer for farms. This practice was only recently stopped along with using bone meal for feed and fertilizer.
So sometimes there is method behind the maddness of not being allowed to compost food wastes.

This is something that has always bothered me about using food waste as feed, actually and I'm glad you brought it up. I try to make myself feel better by thinking that they must test the food and make sure there is no meat in it before they use it as feed..... scary stuff. |

I don't have that much food waste anyway. In my current apartment nobody seems to care what goes in my garbage. Last year the security ajosshi would go through everything and we'd get in trouble if we had anything in the wrong bin. I quickly learned to use those little black plastic bags you get from convenience stores to hide anything troublesome. I still do it; if nothing else, you can tie them up so things smell a lot less in the interval between when you throw them away and when you take out the trash. |

My political views are normally about two small steps to the Left of Genghis Khan and it should grate on my small-government sensibilities to have the authorities meddle in something as personal as people's garbage. But this is the great exception, the one instance where I say "Meddle away!" I'm prepared to fight with my fists for a system of carrot & stick (literally, a big wooden stick) applied with tremendous force to the backsides of people (and posters) who don't comply with Korea's nitpicky garbage-separation rules. It seems the threat of fines aren't enough, so lay on the cane. |

Meat byproducts are sold as chicken feed in america. Chicken coop waste is sold as cattle feed. So the canibalization circle does continue in America. |
