All credit to the Americans for the game against Italy, I must admit I like some of their players, and they seem to be hardworking and decent guys.

However, a report on Sky News here in the UK made me wish the USA werent in the World Cup. They showed the amazing security madness that surrounds Team USA. When they go to the training ground, the team bus is surrounded by police vehicles, with 10 cars in front, and 5 behind. Then they showed the Trinidad and Tobago team cycling to their training ground on bikes

The US training ground was itself like a fortress, anyone going in having to go through airport style security, and huge fences surrounding the place. The team hotel was guarded like it was the US embassy in Berlin, and other guests were pretty unhappy with being frisked everytime they went in and out of their hotel. The locals werent to thrilled about it either.

Do we really need this at the world cup? I mean other teams have much bigger stars, but only a fraction of the security. Are the Americans really that much of a target? I just dont get it. To me it just seems excessive, and its something that doesnt belong at a a World Cup.

I doubt it was the players' choice to have such security measures. I'm not sure who that idea could have come from. I don't think attacking U.S. soccer players would do much good anyway because most Americans don't watch soccer on TV and no one would notice. Regardless, with all the political/cultural rivalries in the world, why so much security for the U.S. team? All countries being represented at the world cup have bad blood with at least one other country. Who's to say some redneck American won't attack a Saudi or Iranian player?
