|
|
Watching the World Cup stuff lately has led me to one undeniable conclusion ... the "conservatism" of this place is all but gone. Seeing how skanky so many women dress now is such a reversal from just 3 or 4 years ago. I'm only in my 4th year and I can't believe how much fashion, music vids, TV etc. have changed.
Look at a Korean music video from 2000/2001 and they're about the same as Debbie Gibson. Bubbly, cute, almost no skin showing ... 3, 4 years later and its half naked women everywhere (not that I'm complaining)
I personally feel we can all thank this girl (and by "this girl" I mean her management/handlers)

Extremely positive thing! Which is why I would not chose the word "skanky" which has derogatory connotations, and would choose "sexy" instead... |

I think this 'incident' in Apgujeong that made it on the news after the first match (I actually just found out about it today though) is the final nail in the coffin of the myth of conservatism here:
Funny, I was just talking to a Korean girl I know on the phone and I mentioned this post, and she said something along the lines of "It's probably due in large part to Lee Hyori" even though I hadn't even mentioned that part in the op.

hahah. i read about that incident on the roof of the van on the Marmot's Hole and apparently many Koreans thought it was a waygook and are searching madly for the identities of the culprits in a similar fashion to how they hunted down the dog poop girl (who urban legend says committed suicide which i hope is completely untrue - she probably just moved to vancouver).
and yes indeed korea is changing rapidly. credit is due there. its a good thing. but while i like seeing short skirts etc., i find it distracting while on the subway sometimes and think maybe i could use with a bet less sexual frustration before i even have my first cup of instant coffee in the morning. a korean friend told me that in korea the shorts get shorter when the economy gets bad. |

You people have NO idea. Had you come here originally ten, fifteen years ago...
It just ain't the same. all the good dying, all the worst grwoing like a weed...
Gotta say, I disagree with he OP's basic opinion on the change in social mores. While they may lead to some social ills, they should also help rid Korea of a few, or at least lessen them, such as wife-battering, out-of-this-world screwing around by Korean men.... etc. |

EFLT, let's keep it in perspective. I wasn't here 15 years ago, but I did
see daily nastiness 9 , almost 10 years ago.
And you have to expect the females in this situation to revolt eventually.
hmm.. maybe you were agreeing with me.
Sure, they didn't have much power except for their sexuality. They figured out how to use it. Power to them. Go, girl@! |

There are those of us who remember it well. Cheers, EFL-T.
I'm no great fan of "bad old wife-beating, Korean Confucianist conservatism", but I'm no greater a fan of skankification. Can't Korea reduce the instance of wife-beating without simply replacing wife-beaters with an equal number of skanks? Why must this be an either (outdated male-chauvinsim, narrowly defined and rigidly enforced social roles, blah blah) or (Western-style skankifcation) tradeoff?
Skankification -- phooey! Never have liked it, in any form or anywhere. The average Western girl when I was growing up would surely rate as an absolute prude by today's standards, in terms of dress and especially speech. When the West started slipping I was already in Asia, my preferences in women had already started to change, and I honestly couldn't have cared less about the skankification, Oprah-fication, Jerry Springer-isation, J-Lo Butt-ification & gangsta-rapisation of Western people and their culture, media, fashion, slang, attitudes and so on.
Mercifully, I haven't had to live with that or them, so it's never been something that could actually annoy me; at worst it bores me briefly now & then when I travel to the West, or when I stumble across expat exponents of skank/trash-talk culture who live here in the Republic. But I can hardly be expected to applaud its arrival in Korean society proper.
Can this phenomenon be blamed on Canadian ESL teachers? Please? |

i recently had a conversation with a K high school teacher about this because of an incident with some students smoking/drinking. he blames it all on american movies. "they see it on american movies and they like it so they do it." wow. |

I don't see a problem with young women enjoying what they got. Skanks? Please. Ever been to a summer concert in North America? |

It would be nice if I could freeze time in the west at about 1990 or so! I'm still a guy and I like seeing pretty girls showing a little skin. But for me the present culture in north America with its "I'm proud to dress like a ho" attitude has gone too far. Still, Korean culture isn't there yet, and it's refreshing to see people let their hair down a little here. More sex, less violence.

A lot of the girls who dress skanky are still frigid though.
Just like some girls who dress like librarians are crazy behind closed doors. |
